RTTY setup was actually easier than i expected through the USB audio, got WSJT-X running in maybe 20 minutes which honestly surprised me coming from the external interface i was using before

one thing that bugs me a little is the fan noise, not terrible but my old 480 was dead silent in receive and im noticing it now in a quiet shack at night. not a dealbreaker just something i wasnt expecting from reading reviews

anybody else make a similar jump from an older Kenwood or Yaesu to the 7300? curious if the honeymoon feeling wore off after a few months or if people are still happy with it

finally pulled the trigger on an IC-7300 — few weeks in, some thoughts

so ive been running an old FT-450D for about 4 years and honestly it served me well but the waterfall was always kind of an afterthought on that thing and i got tired of squinting at it. picked up a used IC-7300 a few weeks back from a guy in the club who was upgrading to a 7610 and figured id share some thoughts since i spent like 3 months reading threads like this before buying.

first thing — the touchscreen took some getting used to. i kept accidentally changing stuff when i was just trying to rest my hand on the desk near it. had to move my mic stand. small thing but nobody mentioned that anywhere. the real time spectrum scope is genuinely useful though, not just a gimmick, i actually caught a pileup forming on 17m that i wouldve missed completely just spinning the dial.

audio out of the box sounds really nice on SSB, better than i expected. did have to tweak the TX EQ a bit because my voice apparently sounds like a wet cardboard box according to my buddy in ohio. also the direct sampling architecture does seem to make a difference on crowded bands, 40m at night is actually usable now which was kind of miserable on the 450.

only gripe so far is the fan kicks on pretty aggressively when youre running any kind of power. not loud enough to be a real problem but its noticeable. shack is in a spare bedroom so maybe thats why it bothers me. anyway if anybodys on the fence about the 7300 for a first real HF rig or an upgrade from something older its hard to argue with what you get for the price these days.

finally pulled the trigger on an IC-7300 — few things i wasnt expecting

so i had been running an old TS-450S for like eight years, which honestly never gave me problems but i wanted to get into digital modes more seriously and the waterfall on the icom just seemed like it would help a lot with finding signals, especially on 40m where things get crowded fast. picked up a used 7300 from a guy locally about three weeks ago and overall yeah its pretty great but there were a couple things that caught me off guard.

first the real signal scope is way more addictive than i thought itd be. i literally just sit there watching it sometimes instead of actually operating, which is kind of embarrassing to admit. second thing — and this surprised me — the receiver feels noticeably different from the 450S. not worse, just different. the 450S had this kind of... i dunno how to describe it, a certain character to how audio sounded on phone. the 7300 is cleaner i guess but took some adjustment.

also spent about two hours messing with the digital modes setup through WSJT-X before i got the levels right. the documentation online is everywhere and some of it is outdated so just be aware of that if youre setting it up. once it clicked though FT8 contacts started rolling in pretty easy.

anyone else come from an older kenwood and notice that kind of audio difference or is it just me getting used to new gear?
