i feel like i must be missing something obvious here because the beacon clearly goes through fine.</p><p>also not sure if relevant but im connected to an internet gateway too through the radio, not just doing RF only if that matters at all</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3302</guid><pubDate>Tue, 30 Jun 2026 19:04:37 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>APRS beacons showing up on aprs.fi but my messages arent getting through</title><link>https://www.hamradiobase.com/forums/topic/4224-aprs-beacons-showing-up-on-aprsfi-but-my-messages-arent-getting-through/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been running APRS for about 6 months now, mostly just tracking with a Kenwood D72 and it works great, i can see myself on the map, digipeaters are picking me up, all that stuff is fine. but im trying to use the messaging side of things and its hit or miss at best. like ill send a message to another station and sometimes they get it, sometimes they dont, and i never get the ACK back so my radio just keeps retrying until it gives up.</p><p>the other station says they see the message eventually on their end but its delayed by like several minutes sometimes. my path is set to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 which i thought was pretty standard. running about 5 watts. is this a path issue or is messaging just kind of unreliable by design? ive read conflicting stuff about whether you need IGate coverage for messaging to work properly vs just RF path to the other station.</p><p>also not sure if this matters but im in a somewhat rural area, theres one digipeater i can hit consistently maybe 30 miles away but i dont know if theres a good IGate nearby</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">4224</guid><pubDate>Tue, 30 Jun 2026 05:58:09 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>APRS packets not showing up on aprs.fi but TNC seems fine</title><link>https://www.hamradiobase.com/forums/topic/2104-aprs-packets-not-showing-up-on-aprsfi-but-tnc-seems-fine/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been fighting this for about two weeks now and im starting to lose my mind a little. running a Kenwood TM-D710G into a Mobilinkd TNC3 (yeah i know the D710 has its own built in TNC but i wanted to try the bluetooth setup on my phone for a while) and i can see packets being decoded in APRSdroid on my phone, other stations are showing up fine, but my own beacons just never appear on aprs.fi or anywhere else i check. the radio is definitely transmitting, i can see the TX light and ive even heard my own packet burst on a second radio sitting next to me, so RF is going out.</p><p>i checked my SSID and callsign like five times, path is set to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 which should be fine for my area, i have three digipeaters within like 15 miles. symbol is set to a car icon. beacon rate is every 2 minutes which honestly might be too frequent but shouldnt cause it to not show up at all right?</p><p>the one thing im not 100% sure about is my audio levels from the phone to the TNC, i adjusted them a couple times but idk if they're right. could that cause it to transmit garbage that sounds like a packet but isnt actually decodable? I'm using an FTM-400XDR with <cite index="13-33,13-36">WIDE2-2 path but my packets aren't consistently reaching the distant iGate</cite>. <strong>Local terrain is hilly with sparse digi coverage</strong>.</p><p>Should I switch to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 for better local coverage, or consider higher power? <cite index="17-41,17-42">Currently running 2-2 but wondering if 2-3 might help in West Texas-style sparse coverage</cite>.</p><p>Also considering adding a temporary fill-in digipeater for our upcoming SAR exercise - any recommendations for minimal hardware setup?</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">433</guid><pubDate>Wed, 24 Jun 2026 07:05:28 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>APRS beacon showing up on aprs.fi but messages not going through??</title><link>https://www.hamradiobase.com/forums/topic/4615-aprs-beacon-showing-up-on-aprsfi-but-messages-not-going-through/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been running APRS for about 6 months now, mostly just position beaconing from the car with a TM-D710G and it works great, i can see myself on aprs.fi no problem. but i decided to try using the messaging function last week and i cant get anything to work consistently. i sent a message to a buddy's HT (he's got a VX-8DR) and it showed up on aprs.fi as delivered but he never got it on the radio itself, and when he replied i got nothing on my end either.</p><p>we're both going through the same igate i think, at least we're both hitting W5XYZ-10 based on the heard-by info. is this a simplex messaging thing where the igate has to be two-way capable or am i missing something in my config. i went through the menu on the 710 and the message settings look right to me but honestly that radio has a million menus and i might have screwed something up somewhere.</p><p>also kind of a side question — does anyone actually use APRS messaging regularly or is everyone just doing position tracking these days. feels like half the igates out there are receive-only and that kills the two-way stuff</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">4615</guid><pubDate>Tue, 23 Jun 2026 10:33:15 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>APRS beacon showing up on aprs.fi but position is way off</title><link>https://www.hamradiobase.com/forums/topic/2998-aprs-beacon-showing-up-on-aprsfi-but-position-is-way-off/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been fighting this for about a week now and im starting to wonder if im just missing something obvious. running a TM-D710G in the shack connected to a mag mount on the roof, position is set manually in the radio since i dont have a GPS hooked up to it yet. the beacon is definitely going out — i can see it hitting aprs.fi and showing up in the heard list from a couple of the local digipeaters — but the position its showing is like 40 miles northwest of me out in the middle of nowhere.</p><p>i went back and double checked the lat/lon i entered in the radio and it looks right to me, at least the degrees part. wondering if maybe i fat-fingered the minutes or the N/W hemisphere designator somewhere. gonna check again tonight but wanted to see if anyone else has run into this and what the usual culprit is. the symbol is showing up correct at least (house icon) so its not a total disaster</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">2998</guid><pubDate>Mon, 22 Jun 2026 16:39:00 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>APRS digipeater not igateing my packets &#x2014;
