Got a Yaesu FTM-400XDR and a Tram 1185 dual band lip mount antenna on the hatch. Ran the power cable direct to the battery with a fuse holder right at the positive terminal, about 18 feet of 12 gauge wire which was kind of a pain to route through the firewall but i found a grommet on the passenger side that worked out fine.

The noise floor is so much better than i expected honestly. Was worried about alternator whine but i think doing the direct battery run helped a lot. I did have a weird issue where the radio would reset when i started the truck but that turned out to be my ground wire being loose at the chassis. Like really loose, embarrassingly loose. Tightened it up and haven't had the problem since.

Only thing i'm still figuring out is antenna placement. The lip mount puts it on the rear hatch which opens obviously so the coax has to loop a bit. Works fine but wondering if anyone has dealt with coax wear over time with a hatch like that. I checked the connector and it looks fine visually but maybe i did something wrong with the PL-259? Or is this normal for a dual band whip and im just overthinking it. The radio works and i can hit the local repeaters on both bands but still bugs me.

Anyone dealt with this before or know what to check first

FT-7900 keeps losing audio when i hit bumps — not the connector though

so this has been driving me nuts for about three weeks now. i have a yaesu ft-7900r mounted under the dash of my f150 and randomly the audio just drops out, like completely silent, and then comes back. sometimes it happens when i go over a rough patch of road, sometimes it happens for no reason at all while im just cruising on the highway. first thing i did was check all the connectors, the power leads going to the battery, the mic connector, all of it looked solid. swapped the mic cable too just to rule that out.

the thing is it doesnt lose the signal entirely — i can still see the squelch light doing its thing on the display, so its receiving but just no sound coming out. then a few seconds later it comes back like nothing happened. its mounted pretty solidly i thought, used the standard bracket and its not rattling around or anything. anyone dealt with something like this before? im starting to wonder if its internal, like a cold solder joint somewhere inside the unit itself. radio is maybe 5 years old, bought it used.

finally mounted my 2m/70cm radio in the truck but now i have a weird RF feedback issue

so i've been running my FT-7900 in the house for about a year just on a desk with a temporary mag mount on the window and decided to finally do a proper mobile install in my F-150. ran the power cable directly to the battery with a fuse near the battery, which i know is the right way to do it. antenna is a diamond NR770HNMO on a lip mount on the trunk lid — well i mean the tailgate i guess since its a truck.

the problem is when i key up on 2m everything sounds fine to me but people are telling me they hear a buzzing or whining noise in my audio that kind of changes with engine RPM. i've heard of alternator whine before but i thought running direct to battery would mostly fix that. the coax shield is grounded at the mount but im wondering if maybe the lip mount isnt making great contact with the truck body. or could it be the audio cable from the radio? i ran everything pretty close together which maybe was dumb.

anyone dealt with this before? kinda at a loss here

finally got my 2m/70cm rig mounted properly — took way longer than expected

so i've been running a little handheld clipped to my visor for like the past 8 months since i got my technician and honestly it worked fine but i always knew i wanted a proper mobile setup. finally pulled the trigger on a Yaesu FT-7900R and spent last saturday getting it all sorted out in my truck.

the head unit is mounted on a RAM mount on the dash which i'm pretty happy with, ran the cable through the firewall which was honestly the most annoying part of the whole thing, took me like an hour just to find a decent grommet spot. power goes straight to the battery with an inline fuse which i know is the right way to do it but crimping those ring terminals in the engine bay was not fun.

antenna is a Tram 1185 on a mag mount for now, eventually want to do a proper lip mount or maybe NMO through the roof but not ready to drill holes yet. and i gotta say the difference between this and the HT is just night and day, i can hit repeaters i could barely scratch before and the audio is so much clearer. anyway if anyones about to do a similar install and has questions feel free to ask, i made plenty of mistakes so i can at least warn you what not to do lol

Finally got my 2m/70cm mobile sorted out - took way longer than expected

so i've been running a little handheld in the car for the past year or so and finally decided to do a proper mobile install with a real radio. picked up a used Yaesu FTM-400 a few months back and it sat on my desk forever because honestly the install intimidated me a bit.

anyway got it done last weekend. ran the power leads directly to the battery with an inline fuse, used the split mount so the head unit sits on the dash and the main body is tucked up under the passenger seat. coax goes up through the firewall and up the a-pillar to a NMO mount i had drilled into the roof. put a Tram 1185 on there for now, figure i can upgrade the antenna later.

first real test was driving around for about an hour hitting the local repeaters and honestly the difference from the handheld is just night and day. no more dropped audio, people can actually hear me clearly, its just... better in every way. wish i had done this sooner tbh.

only issue i ran into was the head cable was just barely long enough to reach where i wanted the control head. anyone else run into that? wondering if there are extension cables available or if i just have to live with the routing i have now.
