I put in the application like 8 days ago and it still just says "pending" or whatever. Is that normal? or am i totally wrong about how that works. i found a couple of old posts online but they were from like 2009 and im not sure if the rules have changed since then

also does it matter what class your license is when youre applying for a specific format? like can a general apply for a 1x2 or is that only for extras. i think i read something about that but i want to make sure before i get my heart set on a particular call that i cant even have yet

sorry if this is a dumb question, i tried reading the actual FCC rules and my eyes glazed over pretty fast

confused about vanity callsign process — when can I even apply?

so I passed my general exam about three weeks ago and I've been using my sequential callsign that the FCC assigned me, which is fine but honestly it's kind of a mouthful and I'd really like to get something shorter or maybe use my initials if thats possible. I've been reading about the vanity callsign system and I'm getting a bit lost.

from what I understand there's like a window system where certain applicants get priority — like if you're applying for a call that belonged to a close relative who was a ham, or if you hold a higher class license. but when I just looked at the 1x2 and 2x1 calls available in my district a lot of them show as unavailable or in some kind of queue. does that mean someone already applied or are they just not released yet?

also I wasnt sure if there's a waiting period after getting your initial sequential call before you can apply for a vanity. someone at my club mentioned something about that but couldnt remember the details. any help appreciated, this is kind of confusing to navigate on the FCC ULS site

confused about vanity callsign process — is it really just a lottery now?

so i finally got my general last month and ive been reading about applying for a vanity call through the FCC ULS system and honestly the whole thing is more confusing than i expected. i thought it was like a first-come first-served thing but then someone at my club said its actually a batch processing system where they collect all the applications over a certain window and then pick randomly from that pool? so if 50 people apply for the same call on the same day none of them have an advantage over each other?

also trying to understand the sequential callsign thing — like when i got licensed i got assigned a call automatically and i gather that goes in some kind of order based on district and license class. my call has a 2x3 format which i guess is what technicians and generals get in my district. is there any way to get a shorter call without going through vanity or do i just have to wait til i upgrade to extra?

not even sure i want to change my call honestly, ive only had it a few weeks and it feels weird to give it up already. but some of the shorter calls look really appealing especially for cw ops which i want to get into eventually. anyway just trying to understand how it all works before i make any decisions

confused about the vanity callsign process — is it really just a waiting game?

okay so i just passed my general last month and upgraded from tech, and ive been thinking about applying for a vanity call. my current sequential call is kind of a mouthful and honestly i just want something shorter for when im doing HF work. 1x2 or 2x1 would be ideal but i know those are basically impossible to get without waiting forever.

anyway i went through the ULS system and looked at some of the available calls in my district and there are actually a few 1x3 calls sitting there that i kind of like. my question is — when you apply for a vanity do they actually process them in the order received, or is it more like a lottery if multiple people apply for the same call on the same day? i read something somewhere that said there was a 30 day window thing but i cant tell if thats still how it works or if that changed. the FCC docs are... not exactly light reading lol

also does it matter that i only have a general and not extra? like will they deprioritize my application or is it just first come first served regardless of license class

Sequential callsign assignment process - how does it actually work?

Been curious about this since getting my Tech license. I know new calls are assigned sequentially based on the regional-group list for your license class and mailing address, but I'm wondering about the mechanics.
