also is it rude to jump in as a total newbie when all these serious contesters are going at it? i feel like id be in the way

also been looking at Field Day results from this past june and SOTA stuff too, those seem a little more relaxed? or am i wrong about that. anyway any advice on just getting started would be great, even if its just "dont worry about your score just get on the air" which is probably the answer lol

first real contest season coming up — where do i even start

so ive been licensed about 8 months now (general) and people keep telling me i should try some of the big contests but honestly the whole thing feels kind of overwhelming. like i looked at the CQ WW rules and my eyes glazed over pretty fast. i understand the basic idea of making contacts and logging points but theres all this stuff about zones and multipliers and i dont really get how it all fits together.

i did do Field Day with my club back in june which was a blast honestly, that was my first taste of really operating under pressure and i got hooked. but that felt more relaxed because there were experienced guys around to help. doing something like CQ WW on my own feels different.

is it worth jumping into CQ WW SSB this fall even if i dont really know what im doing? does it always feel this addictive or does it calm down eventually lol

getting into contesting this year — where do i even start

so ive been licensed for about two years now, mostly just ragchewing on 40m and doing some local stuff with the club. a buddy of mine keeps telling me i should try CQ WW this fall and honestly it sounds kind of intimidating. like i get the basic idea, you work as many stations as possible, different countries and zones count for multipliers etc, but i dont really know the actual flow of it. do people just tune around calling CQ or are you supposed to search and pounce the whole time? and what about Field Day, ive done that once with the club and it was a blast but i was just logging for someone else so i wasnt really operating.

also someone at the hamfest mentioned SOTA and i know thats not technically a contest but it seems related somehow? like people activating summits count toward scores or something? im probably getting that mixed up. anyway just trying to figure out what the on-ramp looks like for someone who hasnt really done serious contesting before. any upcoming events worth targeting for a first timer would be great too

first time doing CQ WW this year, any advice for someone whos never really done a big contest before?

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and my elmer keeps telling me i should jump into CQ WW this fall. i finally have a decent HF setup — nothing fancy, just a 100w rig and a wire dipole up about 30 feet — and i figured why not try it. but honestly i dont even know where to start. like do i just sit there calling CQ contest or do i search and pounce or what. also how does the exchange work exactly because ive seen people log zone numbers and i dont fully understand the zone thing yet.

i also want to try ARRL Field Day next summer since that seems more relaxed and social but CQ WW feels like the big leagues. anyone here done both and can tell me what to expect? im a little intimidated honestly. every time i tune across the bands during a big contest it sounds like absolute chaos and i have no idea how people are copying calls that fast.

also random side question — does anyone do SOTA activations around contest weekends or is that kind of a different world entirely
