im running Winlink Express on windows and using a Signalink USB into my IC-7300, mostly on HF, trying to do vara HF mode. i can see the gateway list in the software and i sorted it by distance but some of those are like 400+ miles out and im not sure if thats normal or if my antenna situation is working against me (just a end fed halfwave up about 30 feet). also not totally sure about the difference between a hybrid and a full gateway, the docs kinda gloss over that part.

anyway if anyone has gone through this setup recently and can shed some light on the workflow i'd appreciate it. mainly just trying to have a backup comms option and maybe help out with emcomm stuff locally.

my setup right now is a Signalink USB into a Yaesu FT-991A, running Vara HF as my modem. ive gotten a few connections to work on 20m but sometimes it just times out after like 4 or 5 attempts and i dont know if thats a propagation thing or if the gateway is just dead. is there a way to tell if a gateway is actually active before you try connecting? the last heard timestamp in the system doesnt always seem reliable to me, had one show a recent timestamp and it just wouldnt connect at all.

also the message handling side — when i send a message to a regular email address does it just go, or is there a delay? asking because im trying to figure out if this is viable for our ARES group to use for actual traffic handling during an exercise next month and i want to know what to actually expect instead of finding out the hard way during the drill.

The problem is the connection just drops partway through sending a message. Sometimes it completes the handshake fine and starts transferring and then just falls apart. Other times it wont even finish connecting. I checked the audio levels about a dozen times, got the SignaLink trim pots set where they should be according to every guide i could find. ALC looks okay on the radio. Vara shows the connection starting and then... nothing.

Is this a gateway issue or am i doing something dumb on my end? I checked the RMS status map and the nearest one shows green but i dont know how current that is. Also not sure if it matters but im connecting on 144.990 which i think is the standard around here but maybe its not?

i checked the signalink levels and i dont think im overdriving it, the waterfall looks clean. ALC is barely moving. i set up the winlink express client fresh last week thinking maybe i had a corrupted install but same behavior. my question is basically is this a propagation thing or is there something about how RMS sessions work that im missing -- like does the gateway have a timeout that im hitting, or could it be my RF path is marginal and VARA is just giving up. any ideas appreciated.

the gateways i'm trying to hit are showing green on the RMS status page so they should be active. im using Vara HF which i paid for the registered version thinking that would help. my question i guess is — is there some checklist or something for getting the first successful connection? like what are the most common things people screw up when first setting this up? also does it matter much which gateway i pick, like should i be targeting the closest one geographically or just whatever has the best signal on the waterfall?

My question is basically — is there something about how RMS gateways work that I'm missing? Like are some of them just not staffed or active even if they show in the map? Also does the gateway operator have to be on the air at that exact moment or is it more like a server that just runs? I genuinely dont know if this is a propagation issue or a setup issue or what. Any help appreciated, been staring at this for too long.

my current setup is a IC-7300 feeding into the built in USB audio, VARA HF as the modem, and im trying to hit a gateway thats supposedly about 80 miles away on 40m. i can see the gateway in the map, it shows active, but when i initiate a session i get a connection attempt and then it just times out or i get a partial handshake and then nothing. checked the frequency offsets, made sure VOX or the CI-V PTT is actually keying the radio (it is, i can see the ALC moving), levels seem okay. not sure if its a propagation thing or something wrong with my config.

also im confused about the whole RMS vs Winlink gateway distinction. like is every RMS node also a full gateway to the internet or are some of them just relay points? i thought they all connected back to the CMS servers but maybe im wrong. and do i need to register my callsign somewhere before i can use the network or does it just work once the software is configured?

any help appreciated, this is for emcomm work and i'd really like to get it sorted before our next exercise

running pat on linux with a ic7300 through rigctl and usually connect to the local VHF gateway about 15 miles away. signal reports are always good both ways so i dont think its an RF issue. wondering if theres some setting im missing or if the gateway itself has message size limits that arent obvious

My question is more about the gateway side of things. Right now im just connecting to whatever shows up in the frequency list that has decent signal. But i've heard people say you should try HF gateways for anything serious, like actual emcomm use or if the local repeater infrastructure goes down. Tried a couple of the HF ones on 40m with PACTOR but my interface only does VARA HF which apparently is fine? Someone at the club said VARA is basically PACTOR-lite and not all gateways support it. Is that still true or has VARA gotten more widespread.

Also — and this is the part that really confuses me — what exactly is a Winlink hybrid network node vs a regular RMS gateway. the documentation is kind of dense and i keep losing track of what connects to what. Do I need to worry about this as an end user or is that more of a gateway operator concern. Thinking long term i might want to run my own RMS relay someday but not sure if thats even worth it given how many are already up.

the winlink client is RMS express, latest version i think, and i can see in the session log it gets through the handshake and starts the transfer then just kind of stops. the gateway doesnt send a disconnect message, it just goes silent and eventually my side times out. i tried two different gateways and same behavior on both which makes me think its something on my end but i cant figure out what.

anyone dealt with this or have a clue where to start? been reading the winlink wiki and honestly its a lot to absorb

my setup is a kenwood TM-V71A into a signalink, running on a pi 4 at the club station. i got VARA FM licensed. the gateway would mostly be for local traffic and passing messages during exercises when internet is sketchy. do i need a separate callsign for the gateway or can it just be my call with a -10 or whatever? and how does the message store-and-forward actually work if the gateway itself doesnt have internet — does it just hold traffic until a connected node picks it up or what

what im confused about is the difference between an RMS relay and a regular RMS gateway. like the documentation kind of explains it but then also doesnt. is a relay just for when theres no internet on the gateway side? i thought all the gateways had to be internet connected to forward to the CMS anyway. also when i set up a session it just sits there saying waiting for channel activity and never connects. ive tried at a few different times of day. the squelch is open on the gateway frequency and i can see the little VARA FM or packet activity light blinking on the gateway side when others connect. so it seems like the gateway is fine.

should i be worried about my audio levels? the Signalink is set pretty much out of the box, i bumped the TX knob up a tiny bit. running Winlink Express with VARA FM, not packet, maybe thats an issue. someone in my club said VARA FM needs the full licensed version to do anything useful but i thought the free version still works just slower. any thoughts appreciated, this is driving me a little nuts

my setup is an IC-9700 into a SignaLink USB, vara fm set to the right audio levels i think, and im hitting W3XYZ-10 which is about 12 miles away and usually has good activity. ive seen other people connect to it on the winlink map so i know the gateway is up.

im wondering if its an audio level thing or maybe i have the TNC mode set wrong in Express. also not sure if i need to do anything special in the message handling settings to get it to actually push the message during the session or if it does that automatically once you're connected. probably something dumb im missing.

also not sure how message handling works on the receiving end - like if i send something to a regular gmail address does it just show up normally or does it have some weird formatting? and what about attachments, should i even bother trying those on a slow link?

the gateway im hitting is about 180 miles away which should be totally fine for the band conditions we've been having, and i can see the S-meter staying steady so its not like im losing the signal. i checked my audio levels a bunch of times and they look okay in the vara waterfall. just wondering if anyone else has run into this or if there's something obvious im missing in the session setup. i mostly wanted this for EMCOMM purposes, our group is trying to get a local RMS gateway going too but i wanted to get client-side working first before i start messing with the server side stuff.

When i try to connect via packet (144.990 around here) the session starts, i can see the AX.25 frames going out, radio is definitely transmitting because i can see the power output, but then it just times out after a few tries. Done the soundcard calibration in the Vara FM setup, levels look okay to me. Not sure if its a path issue or something with how i have the TNC configured in the software. The RMS gateway list shows the sysop callsign and all that so i know where im pointing.

Anyone been through this before with a similar setup? Im starting to wonder if the issue is on my end or if maybe the gateway is having problems it just isnt reflecting in the activity timestamp.

my setup right now is a Kenwood TS-590SG into a SignaLink USB, running Winlink Express on a pretty old laptop. im using VARA HF as the modem because everyone said to just use VARA. my antenna situation is a dipole up about 35 feet, nothing fancy.

the part that confuses me is the gateway selection. like when i open up the RMS list it shows me a hundred gateways and i have no idea how to pick a good one vs a bad one. i know you're supposed to look at distance and frequency but beyond that i kind of just pick whatever looks active and hope for the best. sometimes i connect, sometimes i sit there watching the VARA waterfall do nothing for five minutes.

also i set up a Winlink account and i guess i have an address now (callsign@winlink.org) but what's the actual workflow for like, sending a message to someone who doesn't have Winlink? do they just get a regular email? and if they reply does it come back to me over RF or does it just sit there waiting for me to connect again?

i know this is like four questions in one post but any help appreciated, been reading the docs and they're kind of dense

Hardware: IC-7300 with Pactor TNC for HF, Yaesu FT-7900 for VHF packet. VHF users can connect and send messages locally, but they're stuck in the local queue instead of forwarding to HF gateways.

• Band plan shows excluded frequencies properly configured
• HF forwarding timeout set to 10 minutes
• CMS connection test passes when internet enabled

What am I missing in the forwarding logic? Anyone successfully running hybrid relay operations?

The EWG acts as a bridge between radio-connected users and internet-based Winlink CMS, allowing email over radio with or without internet access. System can operate radio-to-internet or radio-only mode, storing messages locally during outages and auto-forwarding when connectivity returns via RMS Relay. Power consumption was excellent on LiFePO4 batteries.

Anyone else running similar hybrid setups? Interested in comparing power budgets and deployment strategies.

the part im confused about is whether the RMS gateway i picked is actually online and accepting connections or if its just showing up in the list because it was active recently. i think the propagation map shows the path is ok but i honestly dont fully understand how to read that thing yet. do the gateways go offline sometimes mid-day? or is this more likely an audio level issue on my end. i had the signalink tuned for psk31 before so maybe i need to recalibrate everything for vara.

also not sure if it matters but im trying to do this on 40m, the frequency im using is one ive seen listed in the winlink frequency list so i dont think thats the problem. any ideas what to check first?

Using UZ7HO Soundmodem with AGWPE driver as recommended. The KISS driver has timing issues with default RMS Packet settings causing collisions, while AGWPE doesn't have these problems. Should I implement separate frequencies or is there a better workaround?

right now i have Winlink Express installed and i can see gateway stations in the list when i use the RMS Relay map, but when i actually try to connect via VHF (im running a TM-V71A into a Signalink) it either times out or i get a partial handshake and then it just drops. tried a couple different gateways in my area, one about 14 miles away which should be plenty strong enough. my VARA FM is configured and i can see audio levels moving when i key up so i dont think its a levels issue.

the other thing im not clear on is message handling — like when i send a message through Winlink, does it sit in a queue at the RMS until the recipient connects, or does it actually forward to their email in real time? trying to understand this for potential ARES use and i want to make sure im not missing something fundamental about how the store-and-forward works.
