Fired up my old Kenwood TS-430S that I bought used and threw up a random wire antenna. Called CQ and got an answer from W5ABC in Texas - I'm in Vermont! He gave me a 559 report and we exchanged names and locations. <ul><li>Used 25 watts</li><li>Wire antenna in the attic</li><li>Propagation was decent around 1400Z</li></ul> Still shaking from the excitement. reading everything and watching youtube videos and i finally just bit the bullet and took my technician exam last saturday. passed with a 33/35 which honestly surprised me because i blanked on a couple of the electrical questions. anyway im KD9something, still waiting for it to show up in the ULS but my VE gave me a temporary reference number so i can operate now technically.</p><p>my first actual QSO was kind of a disaster lol. i keyed up on the local 2m repeater and completely forgot to say my callsign at the end, the control op had to remind me. then the second time i forgot to wait for the courtesy tone and stepped on someone. so yeah its going great. but i did manage to have a real actual conversation with a guy about 40 miles away and it was pretty cool even if it was just about the weather.</p><p>anyway just wanted to introduce myself, probably gonna ask a lot of dumb questions on here so sorry in advance</p>]]></description><guid how people talk before i jumped in.</p><p>finally keyed up saturday afternoon and managed to work a couple guys from my county, nothing fancy just signal reports and names and stuff but it felt pretty cool. one of them gave me a really long winded explanation of his antenna setup which i mostly didnt understand yet but i nodded along lol. anyway just wanted to say hi to the forum, been lurking here setup but man it felt incredible. like i know its just a repeater contact and not some DX thing but it still got me. anyway just wanted to share since nobody in my family understands why im excited tuesday and my callsign showed up in the FCC database like two days later which i wasnt expecting that fast honestly. anyway i figured id just try the local repeater and see what happened. keyed up, said my call and that i was a new ham looking for a contact and within maybe 30 seconds some guy came back to me. we talked for like 20 minutes about antennas and he gave me a ton of advice about getting on HF eventually. i was kind of nervous the whole time but it went fine. my signal report was 5 and 9 which i guess is good? still learning what all that means. the radio is just a <a href="https://www.hamradiobase.com/go.php?a=Baofeng" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">baofeng</a> uv-5r that i borrowed from a friend until i figure out if this came back to me right away and we had a solid 10 minute QSO about nothing in particular, he asked where i was operating from and what radio i had. i have a <a done.
