Looks like there's a nature reserve about 20 minutes from my house that has a reference number already assigned to it, KFF or whatever the US equivalent is called, so im thinking i'll head out there saturday morning with the ft-891 and the buddistick and see what happens.

My question is really about the logging side of things. With POTA i just use the app and upload to the website after, is WWFF similar? Do i need to pre-announce on a specific spot or cluster? And does it matter if i work the same station twice on different bands, i read something about that but cant find it again. Any help appreciated, dont want to show up and realize ive done something wrong after the fact.

first WWFF activation and i had no idea what i was doing lol

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a state wildlife management area near me, KFF-something, i looked it up on the wwff.us site beforehand. ive done a bunch of SOTA but this was my first flora fauna thing and honestly the vibe is pretty different.

what i wasnt expecting was how relaxed the whole thing felt compared to SOTA. no summit anxiety, no worrying about weather windows, i just found a nice spot near a pond, threw up my linked dipole between some trees and started calling. had my KX2 running about 10 watts and the pile was actually decent, way more than i expected for a reference that probably doesnt get activated that much.

ended up with 44 QSOs over about 2 hours, mix of 40 and 20 meters. logged everything in my paper log and then uploaded to the WWFF portal later which was a little confusing but i figured it out. only thing i didnt know going in was that you need 44 contacts minimum for the activation to count as valid which i barely squeaked by on.

anyway just wanted to share, if you havent tried it and you like the outdoors operating thing its worth looking into. way more references than summit locations in most areas at least around here.

first WWFF activation - didnt really know what i was doing but it worked out

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend, been meaning to try it for ages after reading about it here and on the POTA forums. decided to head out to a local nature reserve that was already in the KFF database and just see how it went. i brought the FT-891 and my end fed halfwave up in a tree, pretty standard setup for me at this point.

honestly i wasnt 100% sure about the logging requirements going in, i kind of just read the rules once and figured id work it out. ended up with 47 QSOs over about 2.5 hours mostly on 40m with a few on 20m, and i think that counts as a valid activation? I didnt have great cell service out there so i couldnt self spot on the WWFF spotter page and i think that hurt my rate a lot toward the end. i was using HAMRS in the field and then converted to adif when i got home. also wondering if theres a minimum number of QSOs to count as a valid activation — i thought i heard 44 somewhere but want to make sure im not misremembering that. and one more thing, do phone and CW contacts count the same toward that total or is it separate?

anyway really enjoyed it, way more social than just sitting at the home station calling DX. the spot where i set up had a creek nearby and the whole thing just felt really good. definitely going to keep doing this.

First WWFF activation tomorrow, little nervous about the logging side of things

So I finally decided to stop just reading about WWFF and actually go do one. Got a nature reference picked out, its a state wildlife management area about 20 minutes from my house, KFF-XXXX number registered and everything. Planning to run QRP with my KX2 and a wire antenna thrown up in a tree.

My question is really about the logging. I know you need 44 QSOs minimum to get the full activation credit but im not 100% sure about what info I actually need to capture per contact. Obviously callsign, time, frequency, mode... but does the exchange have to be anything specific or do people just do a normal signal report exchange? I've seen some people mention giving out the reference number during the contact and others don't seem to bother on every QSO.

Also wondering about spotting myself on the WWFF spotting network vs pota spots. Can you use both? Feels like a dumb question but I genuinely dont know. Any advice from folks who've done a bunch of these appreciated, dont want to mess up the logging and have to redo it.

first WWFF activation tomorrow, bit nervous, any last minute tips?

so ive been planning this for about three weeks now and tomorrow i'm finally doing my first WWFF activation at a local nature reserve, its listed as a KFF reference which is great. ive done a few SOTA activations before so i kind of know the drill with portable operating but WWFF feels a bit different because from what i understand you need 44 QSOs to get a valid activation logged? or is it just 44 for the hunters to count it toward their awards, im a little fuzzy on the exact rules still.

my plan is to run my KX2 with a random wire up in a tree, should be fine for 40 and 20m, maybe poke at 17m if conditions cooperate. ive already spotted myself on the WWFF spotting network and set up an alert on parksnpeaks. just hoping the bands dont completely die on me. the reserve is pretty remote which is exciting but also means if something goes wrong im kind of on my own out there.

anyone done activations at KFF references specifically, any quirks i should know about compared to other programs? and do i need to submit my log anywhere specific after or does it go through the normal ADIF upload route

first WWFF activation went better than expected, few questions though

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a local state forest, KFF-something i dont remember the exact number off the top of my head. been wanting to try this for ages after watching a few videos and reading about it here and there. set up my end fed wire between two trees, ran about 20 watts on 40m and made contact pretty quickly which honestly surprised me because i wasnt sure if anyone would be hunting for references on a random saturday morning.

ended up with 12 contacts which i know isnt the 44 you need for a valid activation but i ran out of time and also my 857 started acting weird with the SWR, probably a connector issue on my feedline. anyway i logged everything on paper and need to figure out how to upload to the WWFF database, is it just an ADIF upload or is there a specific format they want? also do partial activations even get recorded or does it only count once you hit 44? genuinely curious because i want to go back and finish it properly

first WWFF activation coming up, any tips from folks who've done it?

so ive been doing SOTA for about a year now and someone at the club mentioned WWFF and honestly i kind of fell down a rabbit hole reading about it this past weekend. looks like there are a bunch of parks and nature reserves near me that qualify as references and ive been wanting to do something a bit different anyway since theres not a lot of summits in my area worth activating.

i registered on the wwff.cc site and claimed one of the local references which is a state forest about 20 minutes from my house. planning to run QRP with my KX2 and a wire antenna thrown up in a tree, same setup i use for SOTA mostly. do i need to do anything special with logging compared to SOTA, like do i still upload to ADIF on WWFF logbook? and is 44 contacts still the threshold for a full activation or did that change? i saw some conflicting info online and couldnt tell if it was outdated.

also wondering if anyone has tips on spotting yourself for WWFF specifically, does the POTA app work or do i need to use a different spotter

first WWFF activation went better than expected, few questions though

So i finally got out and did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a state forest near me, WFF reference is KFF-something i'll have to look it up again. Been meaning to do one of these for ages and just never got around to it. Anyway packed up the KX2 and a linked dipole, hiked about 2 miles in to get away from the parking lot noise and found a nice spot near a creek.

Got my 44 contacts which i know is the threshold for a valid activation and actually ended up with closer to 60 which surprised me, didnt think there would be that many people hunting. Spotted myself on the WWFF spotter page which helped a lot. Most contacts were on 40m SSB but i threw in a few on 20m too when 40 got quiet.

My questions are kind of dumb but here goes -- do i need to submit my log somewhere specific for WWFF or does it work like POTA where you just upload to their site? And also is there any difference between activating a reference that's already been activated vs one that hasnt been touched yet? like does a virgin reference count for anything extra or is it just bragging rights. also saw something about nature conservation contacts or something where you get credit for working other WWFF stations, is that the hunters side of things or am i mixing it up with something else
