embarrassed myself on a net last night, could use some guidance

so i finally got my general last month and have been lurking on a few local nets trying to build up confidence before actually checking in. last night i just went for it and checked into the tuesday evening 2m net and it went okay i think but there were a couple moments where i wasnt sure what i was supposed to do and i feel like i probably stepped on someone.

like when the net control called for check-ins i waited what felt like forever and then just said my callsign and the guy came back to me fine but then later there was some kind of directed traffic portion and i had no idea what was happening so i just stayed quiet. is that the right move? also at one point two people were talking and there was a gap and i thought they were done so i started to key up and then realized they werent done and i just kind of... stopped mid transmission. im sure everyone heard that half-second of dead air from me.

anyway nobody said anything bad and the net control was super nice about it but i'd love to know what i was supposed to be doing during those different parts of the net. how do you know when a directed net switches to open or whatever? is there a standard way nets are run or does every club do it different?

oh man we have all been there, dont even stress about it. your first few check-ins are always a little awkward and honestly stepping on someone briefly or fumbling the timing is just part of learning.

yeah what he said. also most nets have a net preamble they read at the start that kinda explains the format so if you can catch it at the beginning that helps a lot. i just got my general too and star

oh man we have all been there, dont even stress about it. your first few check-ins are always a little awkward and honestly stepping on someone briefly or fumbling the timing is just part of learning. i've been licensed 12 years and i still occasionally key up at the wrong moment.

to answer your questions though — nets vary a lot by club but most follow a pretty similar structure. the net control will usually announce when theyre moving from directed traffic to general check-ins or open discussion, so listening for that announcement is the key thing. if youre ever unsure just wait and let someone else go first, youll pick up the rhythm quick. the directed traffic part is basically when specific stations are called by the NCS to pass formal messages, usually stuff like health and welfare traffic or ARRL radiograms. if you dont have any traffic to pass you just stay off unless youre called.

as for the gap thing — that happens constantly. people leave a little space between overs for a reason, sometimes to think, sometimes because theyre writing something down. good rule of thumb is wait for them to say 'go ahead' or 'over' or hear the squelch tail before you key up. some nets are faster-paced and you have to feel it out but better to wait a beat too long than to step on someone. sounds like you did fine honestly.

yeah what he said. also most nets have a net preamble they read at the start that kinda explains the format so if you can catch it at the beginning that helps a lot. i just got my general too and started checking into nets maybe two months ago, it does get way less nerve-wracking after like the third or fourth time. the tuesday group sounds like your local ARES or traffic net maybe? ours does the same thing where they do formal traffic first then open it up.
