SDRplay RSP1A vs just using a cheap RTL-SDR dongle — worth the upgrade?

so ive been messing with an RTL-SDR v3 dongle for about a year now and honestly its been great for what it is, airband, APRS decoding, tracking flights with dump1090, all that stuff. but i keep reading about the SDRplay RSP1A and wondering if its actually worth the jump in price or if im just GAS-ing out again.

main thing i want to do more of is HF. the RTL with the direct sampling mod works but its... not great. lots of noise, dynamic range seems to fall apart when theres strong signals nearby. was on 40m last night and could barely pull anything out with a strong broadcast station like two MHz away just absolutely stomping everything.

so is the RSP1A actually meaningfully better on HF or is it one of those things where youre paying for specs on paper and the real world performance is kind of meh. also curious if SDRuno is actually decent or if most people just use it with SDR# or HDSDR anyway. i dont mind paying like $120 or whatever but id rather not if the dongle with a better antenna would get me most of the way there.

The RSP1A is a genuine step up, not just spec sheet stuff. The big thing you'll notice on HF is the front end — it handles strong signals way better, the RTL just gets overwhelmed and you start seeing all kinds of artifacts that aren't real signals. I had the exact same problem on 40m, broadcast stations from Europe killing everything in a 500kHz radius basically.

SDRuno is okay, I use it sometimes but honestly I end up back in SDR# or HDSDR most of the time out of habit. There's a SDRplay plugin for SDR# that works fine. The RSP1A also has a decent built-in preamp and selectable MW/FM notch filters which actually help a lot in practice. If you're doing serious HF work though, a bandpass filter or preselector is still going to help regardless of which SDR you're using — the band conditions plus local noise I have here still benefit from that.

Short answer: yeah worth it if HF is your main thing.

cant really speak to the RSPplay specifically but i went from a no-name dongle to the RTL-SDR v3 and that alone made a big difference on HF with direct sampling. if youre still on a generic dongle that might be a cheaper first step. that said a guy in my club has the RSP1A and it does look noticeably cleaner on a waterfall compared to anything RTL based ive seen side by side.

also someone mentioned the HackRF to me as an alternative and while its cool because its transmit capable too, for just receiving HF i think the RSP1A probably makes more sense, the HackRF noise floor is actually worse than a good RTL dongle in some situations from what i read. anyway i might be wrong on some of this, still pretty new to the SDR rabbit hole
