thinking about going for extra class but not sure if the theory jump is as bad as people say

so ive been a general for about two years now and i keep going back and forth on whether to sit for the extra exam. i know the general was a step up from tech but honestly i kind of just memorized a lot of it without really understanding the theory behind some of it. the extra pool seems way more intense when i look at it, like there's stuff about filter design and transmission line theory and i see questions about vacuum tube amplifiers which i honestly didn't expect in 2024

my main question i guess is whether people actually understand all of it before they take the test or if most folks just use the question pool and pattern recognition to pass. i dont really care about the hf privileges since im already on 40 and 20 with my general, i think the main thing pulling me toward it is just wanting to know i actually understand the hobby at a deeper level. is that a naive reason to do it or does the studying actually teach you something real

honestly the theory jump is real but its not as scary as the question pool makes it look at first glance. i spent about 6 weeks going through the hamstudy site and also picked up a copy of the arrl extra class manual which i actually found pretty readable. the stuff on impedance matching and transmission lines clicked for me once i stopped trying to memorize it and just worked through the math a couple times with actual numbers.

the vacuum tube questions are kind of funny yeah, i think they're leftovers from older versions of the pool and probably will eventually get phased out but whatever. the filter theory and op-amp sections actually taught me stuff i use now when im looking at antenna designs or trying to understand why my feedline is doing something weird. so to answer your question no its not naive at all, i learned more from studying for extra than i did from any of the other two licenses combined. just dont try to cram it in a week

passed mine last spring and i'll be honest i used question pool memorization probably 60% of the way there. the other 40 i actually sat down with some youtube videos on LC circuits and finally understood why a parallel resonant circuit behaves the way it does at resonance. some of the regulatory stuff is just flat memorization though, like the exact frequency edges for extra class privileges on 75 meters or whatever, theres no real theory there just gotta know it.

the privileges are actually more useful than you might think even if youre already on 40 and 20, the extra segment on 75 and also 15 meters can be noticeably less crowded during contests which is kinda nice. but yeah the studying does teach you real stuff, at least it did for me
