confused about the vanity callsign process — is it really just a lottery?

so i passed my general last month and ive been using my sequential call which is fine but its kind of a mouthful and honestly a little embarrassing to send in CW haha. a friend told me i can apply for a vanity call through the FCC but i looked at the ULS system and im honestly lost. like is there an actual window you wait for or do you just apply and hope for the best?

i tried reading through the ARRL page on it but it kept referencing stuff about the old filing windows which i think dont exist anymore? or do they. i cant tell if the info is outdated. from what i can piece together it seems like you just submit an application and if nobody else applied for the same call during some period then you get it, but if multiple people apply for the same one then theres a tiebreaker based on some preference order — like a widow/widower of a former holder gets priority, then immediate family, then the previous licensee themselves if they let it lapse, and then general applicants are kind of at the bottom of the pile.

is that right? and how do you even find out which calls are available? i found some third party sites that track this stuff but i dunno how current they are. any of you been through this recently

yeah you basically have it right. the filing windows are gone, its been a continuous filing system for a while now. you submit through the FCC ULS and there's a 18-day waiting period where other applicants can also apply for the same call. if youre the only one at the end of that window, you get it. if multiple people applied then the preference order kicks in like you described — and yeah general applicants are at the bottom so if a family member or former holder wants it too you're probably not getting it.

for finding available calls, ae7q.com is pretty much the go-to. its updated pretty regularly and you can search by prefix, suffix length, all kinds of filters. i used it when i grabbed my current call a few years back and it was accurate. just double check anything you really want against the actual ULS before you get your heart set on it because sometimes theres a lag.

one thing worth knowing — a 1x2 or 2x1 call is going to have a lot more competition than a 2x3. if you just want something shorter or easier to send, a 2x2 in your district is usually pretty attainable without much drama.

went through this whole thing about six months ago and honestly the 18 day wait nearly killed me, kept refreshing the ULS like a crazy person lol. but it worked out fine, nobody else applied for the one i wanted and it went through smooth. the hardest part is just picking something that isnt already taken or in that post-expiration limbo where its technically available but hasnt cleared yet. ae7q shows that status pretty clearly though once you figure out how to read it
