do you actually need to use phonetics every time or just sometimes

ok so ive been licensed for about 4 months now and still not totally sure when im supposed to use the NATO phonetic alphabet vs just saying letters normally. like if someone asks for my callsign do i always spell it out with Alpha Bravo Charlie etc or is that just for when conditions are bad? i feel like i hear some guys on the local repeater just say their call normally and others go full phonetic every single time. is there like a rule or is it just preference? i dont want to sound like im overdoing it but also dont want to miss something important

honestly there's no hard rule written in stone about it, it's more of a situational thing. on a clear local repeater with good signal most people will just say their call straight and everyone hears it fine. but if you're on HF or conditions are marginal at all, phonetics can save you from having to repeat yourself three times. the reason the NATO alphabet exists is specifically because certain letters sound nearly identical over a scratchy RF link — B and D and E and G for example all kinda blur together. so the general practice most people follow is, first contact or if theres any doubt, go phonetic. after that if the QSO is going fine you can relax a bit. some guys phonetic every single time out of habit and thats fine too, nobody's going to complain. you'll develop your own feel for it pretty quick.

yeah what he said. i will add though that in nets, especially formal traffic nets, they pretty much expect full phonetics every time for callsigns. so if you ever check into one of those be ready. but on a casual ragchew or just acknowledging someone on a repeater, doing the whole Alpha Bravo thing every single time can actually feel a bit stiff and robotic lol. just kind of read the situation
