first SOTA activation didn't go quite as planned but still had fun

so i finally did my first activation last weekend, been chasing for about 6 months and figured it was time to actually get up on a summit myself. picked W6/CT-096 because it looked pretty approachable on the map and the trail report said it was in decent shape

brought the KX2 with a linked dipole i built from the instructions on the sotabeams site, threw it up between two trekking poles which honestly worked way better than i expected. spotted myself on sotawatch before leaving the trailhead and had a small pileup waiting when i got up there which was pretty cool

the part that didnt go great — i only made 3 QSOs on 40m before the band just kind of died on me, tried 20m and got a few more but i was really fighting the noise. made the 4 contacts to qualify which is all that matters i guess but felt like i was leaving points on the table. also forgot to log the time on two of the contacts so im going to have to estimate when i submit to the database, hope thats okay

overall though it was just really fun to be up there running portable. already looking at the map for my next one. anyone have tips for the spotting and alerting side of things, like how far in advance do people usually post alerts

congrats on the activation, getting those 4 contacts is all you need and it sounds like you did great for a first time out. the logging time thing happens to everybody at least once, just estimate as close as you can and add a note when you submit, the database admins are pretty understanding especially if its only off by a few minutes

for alerts i usually post mine the night before if i know the plan is solid, but a lot of people wait until theyre actually heading up and do a self-spot when they hit the summit. the alerts help chasers plan their day but dont stress too much if yours goes up last minute. and if you have cell signal on the summit sotawatch or the SOTA Spotter app makes self-spotting really easy. 40m can be rough depending on the time of day, a lot of activators try to hit the morning window before things get too noisy. sounds like youre already hooked though

W6/CT-096 is a nice one, did that one myself a couple years back. yeah 40m in the afternoon is kind of a crapshoot depending on conditions and time of year. i've started carrying a small linked dipole cut for 30m as well since that band tends to be a bit more reliable when 40 goes soft and its not as crowded as 20. anyway welcome to the addiction, SOTA is the reason i actually lost 15 pounds last year lol
