using DXwatch and QRZ cluster spotting together — am i doing this right?

so ive been messing around with cluster spotting for maybe the past month or so and im still not totally sure im using these tools the right way. basically what i do is have DXwatch open in one tab and QRZ logbook in another and i kinda bounce between them trying to figure out whats active on the bands. worked a few new ones this way but it feels a little clunky.

my question is mostly about the filters on DXwatch — i can filter by band and mode but i dont really understand the continent filter. like if i filter to only show spots FROM north america does that mean the station being spotted is in north america, or the person doing the spotting is in north america? that distinction matters a lot i think and the help page on the site doesnt really explain it well at all.

also is there a better app or tool people use for this? ive heard of DX4WIN and some guys on my club use Ham Radio Deluxe with the built in cluster thing but im just running a simple station at this point, nothing fancy. would love to know what other people actually use day to day.

the continent filter on DXwatch is filtering by where the spotter is located, not the DX station. so if you pick North America you're seeing spots that were submitted by North American stations. the idea being those guys heard the signal and it gives you a rough idea of propagation from your part of the world. took me a while to wrap my head around that too honestly.

for what its worth i just keep a browser tab open to dxwatch and use the audio alert feature when something i actually care about shows up. i have it filtered to 20 and 17 meters most of the time and set a region filter for Europe and Asia since thats what im usually chasing. the cluster inside HRD is fine but i always felt like the standalone web tools gave me a cleaner picture without having to have the whole logging suite running. if youre just getting started i wouldnt overthink the software side of it, the bands will humble you way before the tools do lol

yeah what he said about the spotter location is correct. caught me off guard too when i first started. one thing i also do is cross reference with the DX cluster on pskreporter when im doing digital modes, that site is incredible for seeing real time propagation, like you can literally watch your signal reports come in on a map as you transmit. not exactly the same as cluster spotting but it kind of complements it if you do FT8 or JS8.

also there are some Android apps like DX Cluster or PileUp! that pull from the same networks and you can glance at your phone while youre at the rig without switching tabs on the computer. nothing groundbreaking but convenient.
