New to ARES - what training do I actually need?

Just got my General ticket and want to get involved with ARES/RACES in my area. I see mentions of ICS-100, IS-700, EC-001, and other courses everywhere but different groups seem to have different requirements. What's actually mandatory vs recommended? My local EC mentioned something about FEMA courses but I'm getting overwhelmed by all the acronyms. Anyone have a clear breakdown of what I need to complete before I can actually help during an activation?

The DHS now requires all volunteers, including amateur radio operators, to have completed the FEMA IS-100.c, IS-200.c, IS-700.b and IS-800.d courses. As a result, the Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management has mandated that all amateur radio operators participating in emergencies must have completed the FEMA training courses. Plus the ARRL EC-001-S course so that everyone has the fundamental knowledge of how amateur radio operates as part of emergency communications.

I just finished these courses myself! For non-governmental employees and others without access to classroom instruction, these courses are available as on-line independent-study courses that are free of charge. Start with IS-100 and IS-700 - they're pretty straightforward and give you the ICS basics. The EC-001 course really helped me understand how we fit into the bigger picture.

We recommend that members complete free online FEMA courses IS-100 and IS-700. SKYWARN training is also encouraged. But honestly, check with your local group first - some are more relaxed about timing. The important thing is you're interested in helping! Don't let the paperwork scare you off.
