when is it ok to break into a net? kinda confused about the whole process

so ive been listening to the Tuesday evening net on our local repeater for a few months now, just lurking and getting a feel for things before i actually checked in. finally did my first check-in last week and it went fine i guess, net control acknowledged me and moved on. but then partway through i heard someone just kind of... jump in between two other stations talking? and net control seemed fine with it but i wasnt sure if that was allowed or if that person just knew everyone and it was a casual thing.

also related question, whats the right way to indicate youve got traffic or a comment vs just checking in with nothing to pass? i just said my callsign and nothing else and it worked but i noticed other people were saying stuff like "with comment" or "no traffic" after their call. is there like a standard for that or does it vary by net? i dont want to step on anyone or come off as rude since these guys have clearly been running this net for years and i dont want to be that guy who doesnt know the unwritten rules

hey welcome to actually getting on the air, that first check-in is always a little nerve wracking. so the short answer on breaking in — it really does vary by net, some nets are pretty formal and you

yeah im in the same boat honestly, been doing my local net for maybe 6 months now and it still feels a little awkward sometimes. one thing i noticed is that some nets post their procedures on the club

hey welcome to actually getting on the air, that first check-in is always a little nerve wracking. so the short answer on breaking in — it really does vary by net, some nets are pretty formal and you absolutely wait to be recognized, others are more of a roundtable vibe where people jump in pretty naturally. your net control sets the tone. if you ever need to break in urgently (like you have a time-sensitive piece of traffic or an emergency obviously) most nets you'd just say your callsign once clearly and wait for NC to acknowledge you.

the "with comment" or "no traffic" thing is just helpful for the net control so they can plan how long the session will run and know who needs airtime. totally fine to just give your call and let NC ask if you have anything, especially as a newer check-in. honestly the best thing is just keep listening like youve been doing and youll pick up the rhythm pretty fast. most net controls are happy to gently correct someone who steps on the wrong spot, nobody's gonna bite your head off for being new
