confused about sequential vs vanity callsign process — when can I even apply?

okay so I just passed my technician exam last week and I'm still waiting on my callsign to show up in ULS. my VE team said it usually takes a few days but I've been obsessively refreshing the FCC site like every hour lol. anyway while I was down that rabbit hole I started reading about vanity callsigns and now I'm more confused than before I started.

so from what I can tell, when you first get licensed you just get whatever sequential callsign the FCC assigns you based on your district and license class, right? like I dont get to pick anything at that stage. but then after that I can apply for a vanity call? is there a waiting period or can I do it right away once my initial call shows up? and does it cost anything now — I thought the FCC started charging a fee a while back but I've seen conflicting info online.

also kind of a separate thing but my uncle who got licensed in the 80s has a really short 1x2 call and he said I could potentially get something like that eventually if I upgrade to general or extra. is that accurate or was he just messing with me

so yeah you've basically got the right idea. the sequential process is automatic — FCC just assigns you the next available call in your district based on your license class, you have zero say in it. once that call is in the system and your license is actually granted (not just the CSCE, the actual license showing in ULS), you can apply for a vanity call pretty much right away, no waiting period that I know of.

the fee thing is real, it's $35 now for a vanity application I believe, and that covers a 10 year license term. used to be free which a lot of old timers are still grumpy about but whatever, it is what it is.

your uncle is right that call format availability depends on license class. 1x2 calls like W6AB or K4XY are reserved for extras only. as a tech you'd be looking at 2x3 format calls in your district. upgrade to extra and a whole lot more options open up, including those shorter prestige calls if any are available in your district. some districts have way more available than others so it kinda depends where you are.

went through this exact same thing like 8 months ago so I can tell you from experience — the ULS refresh obsession is totally normal, I think I checked it every 20 minutes for three days straight haha. mine showed up on day 4 after my session.

one thing I'll add that caught me off guard is that when you do apply for a vanity call, you're not guaranteed to get your first choice. if multiple people apply for the same call in the same application window the FCC does a random selection among them. so if theres a really desirable call you want, like something short or meaningful to you, just know other people might want it too. i ended up getting my second choice which still worked out fine but just something to be aware of going in.
