new to nets — kind of embarrassed to check in, any tips?

so ive been licensed for about 4 months now, general class, and i keep meaning to check into the local 2m net on tuesday nights but i always chicken out at the last second. i know that sounds dumb but i genuinely dont know the right way to do it. like when do you actually key up? do you wait for the net control to specifically ask for check-ins or is there a window where you just jump in? last week i tried and there were already people checking in and i didnt want to step on anyone so i just listened the whole time again.

also is it weird to just say your callsign and nothing else or are you supposed to say your name and location every time? ive heard some people do the full intro and some just say their call. i dont want to be that guy who does it wrong in front of everyone on the frequency lol

dont be embarrassed at all, everyone goes through this. honestly the best thing you can do is just listen to a few nets before you jump in, which it sounds like you already have been doing so youre already ahead of most people.

the net control will usually say something like "are there any further check-ins" or "net is now open for check-ins" and thats your window. you just wait for a pause and then say your callsign nice and clear — phonetics can help if the band is noisy. some nets want name and location, some just want the call, usually net control will tell you at the start of the net what they want. if they dont say, just your callsign is fine and theyll ask for more if they need it.

honestly most net controls are happy to have new people check in and theyll work with you if youre not sure what to do. the tuesday night guys on our local net are super chill about it. just go for it next week, worst case you fumble a little and everyone moves on in about 4 seconds

yeah same thing happened to me when i first started. i just kind of blurted out my callsign at what i thought was the right time and net control came right back to me and it was totally fine. the nets ive been on are pretty forgiving. one tip i got was to have your callsign written down in front of you so you dont blank on it when you key up — sounds silly but when youre nervous your brain does weird things
