when do you actually use phonetics vs just saying the letter normally

so ive been on HF for about 8 months now and i notice some guys use phonetics for literally everything and others barely use them at all, like theyll just say the letters of their callsign without going full NATO. is there like an actual rule for when you're supposed to use them or is it just personal preference? i mostly do general rag chewing on 40m and sometimes 20m when the band cooperates. my callsign has a couple letters that sound similar (C and E are in there) so i do use phonetics for those just to be safe but i feel kind of dumb doing the whole Alpha Bravo Charlie routine when conditions are totally clear and the other station is 59. also someone told me theres alternate phonetics people use when the NATO ones dont get through well in certain situations but i have no idea what they meant by that, maybe regional things? anyway just curious what you all actually do in practice not what the handbook says

yeah its really just situational, theres no hard rule that says you have to use phonetics on every single exchange. when the band is quiet and signals are strong most people just rattle off their call

yeah its really just situational, theres no hard rule that says you have to use phonetics on every single exchange. when the band is quiet and signals are strong most people just rattle off their call without phonetics and everyone copies it fine. where it matters is when conditions are rough or theres QRM, thats when foxtrot and november start doing real work because your brain fills in the gaps easier with a full word than just a letter sound. the thing your friend mentioned about alternate phonetics is real -- some ops use things like "New York" or "Texas" instead of the NATO equivalents, you hear it a lot from older timers or guys who learned before NATO got standardized in the hobby. some of them will use whatever word is clear rather than stick to the official list. personally i default to NATO because everyone knows it and it avoids confusion but if youre in a pileup and nobody's copying Foxtrot you say Florida or whatever gets through. DX stations especially, if english isnt their first language the NATO words were actually chosen to be recognizable across languages so theyre usually the better bet

honestly same question when i started lol. i just kind of do it when i feel like the other person might not catch a letter, like over a noisy path or if someones just getting started and might not recognize my call. one thing i picked up though is during nets they usually want phonetics every time you ID, the NCS will often ask for it if you dont. took me a couple sessions to figure that out the embarassing way
