confused about vanity callsigns and how the sequential thing even works

ok so i just passed my general last month (finally) and i've been reading about vanity callsigns and i'm honestly more confused now than before i started. like i understand you can apply for a specific call through the FCC ULS but i dont really get how the sequential process works if you don't apply for a vanity.

right now i have a 1x3 call from when i got my tech a couple years ago and honestly its not the worst but i'd love something shorter eventually. my elmer was telling me about 1x2 calls being available in some districts and how there's a whole system for who gets priority but he kind of lost me halfway through.

does the sequential process just automatically assign you the next available call in your district? and if i apply for a vanity do i lose my current call in the meantime or does it stay until the new one is approved? i don't want to be callsign-less even for a day lol. also is there a fee now or did that change again, i've seen conflicting stuff online about this.

so the sequential thing basically means if you just do a standard upgrade or initial license the FCC system spits out the next available callsign in a pool for your district, you dont get to pick it.

so the sequential thing basically means if you just do a standard upgrade or initial license the FCC system spits out the next available callsign in a pool for your district, you dont get to pick it. vanity is the way to go if you actually want a specific call.

for the vanity process — no you wont be without a call. your current callsign stays active the whole time the application is pending. once the vanity gets granted that becomes your new call but theres a few days sometimes where both might show up in the system which is weird but fine. the whole application window thing is where people get tripped up... there's a 18 day filing window and after it closes the FCC processes all the apps for that call at once. if multiple people applied for the same call it comes down to license class and then how long you've been licensed, that's the priority system your elmer was probably trying to explain.

and yes the fee situation changed, its $35 now per application through the FCC. that came in a couple years ago after it had been free for a long time. lot of people grumbled about it but its not terrible. there are sites like AE7Q that make tracking available calls and application status way easier than trying to parse the ULS yourself, definitely bookmark that one.

i went through this exact same confusion when i got my general last year haha. ended up just going for a vanity 2x2 in my district and honestly the AE7Q website is your best friend for figuring out whats available. i spent like two evenings just browsing calls before i found one i liked that wasnt already taken or in a weird pending state.

one thing nobody told me — if the call you want has been recently cancelled or the previous holder is a silent key, there can be a waiting period before its available for vanity applications. something like 30 days i think? so if you find a call you want and it shows as recently cancelled just keep an eye on it and don't assume you missed it.
