when do you actually need to use phonetics vs just saying the letter normally

ok so i just got my tech license a few months ago and ive been listening a lot on local repeaters before jumping on myself. i notice some people spell things out with like alpha bravo charlie and some people just say the letters normally. is there like a rule for when you use the nato phonetics vs just saying letters? or is it just personal preference

also i was on a net last week and the net control asked me to give my callsign phonetically and i kind of froze because i dont have them all memorized yet. like i know the common ones but some letters i just blank on. is that something that comes with time or do people write them down somewhere near the radio

yeah totally comes with time, dont stress it. honestly most folks have a cheat sheet somewhere near the rig when they first start, nothing wrong with that. i had one taped to my desk for probably the first six months and now i dont even think about it.

as for when to use phonetics, the general idea is you use them when there might be confusion or the signal isnt great. like if someone asks for your call and conditions are clear you might just say the letters but if theres any qrm or youre not sure they got it right, phonetics are the way to go. on a lot of nets they just expect phonetics for callsigns as a matter of habit because it avoids having to repeat yourself. some letters are just really hard to distinguish on the air, b and d and e and g especially

I keep a laminated card with all the NATO phonetics velcroed right next to my radio. been licensed 11 years and I still glance at it sometimes for weird letters like X or Z because honestly when do you ever say xray or zulu in normal life. the muscle memory just isnt there for some of them.

one thing i'll add is that the phonetics matter way more on HF than on local repeaters where signals are usually pretty solid. when youre working a pileup or doing a dx contact with someone in another country and theres noise and fading all over the place, proper phonetics can mean the difference between getting in the log and having to repeat your call six times. i've heard people make up their own phonetics too which honestly just causes more confusion, had a guy say november alpha november charlie yankee once and it took me a second to realize he was just spelling nancy. stick to nato
