confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs just mailing cards — what does everyone actually use?

so im about 8 months into this hobby and ive been making contacts pretty regularly now, mostly on 40m and some 2m local stuff. my elmer mentioned i should start confirming my contacts but now im down a rabbit hole and honestly more confused than when i started.

from what i can tell theres LoTW which is the ARRL thing, and then theres eQSL which is a different website, and then people still actually mail physical cards through the bureau or direct? and some awards only accept certain ones? i set up a LoTW account like two weeks ago but i havent uploaded anything yet because i got confused about the certificate process and kind of gave up halfway through.

do most people do all three or do you just pick one. and is it worth getting physical cards printed if youre just starting out or is that overkill. my logging software is log4om if that matters

okay so dont let this overwhelm you, it really does seem more complicated than it is at first. LoTW is definitely the most important one to get set up if you care about DXCC or other ARRL awards down the road — a lot of serious DX stations upload there and nowhere else. the certificate process is a little annoying but you basically just have to mail a postcard to ARRL with your callsign and they send you back credentials, or if you got your license recently theres a faster way through the FCC database. once thats done TQSL (the software you use to upload) isnt too bad.

eQSL is worth having too, some people only use that, and its free and easier to set up. i wouldnt skip it. physical cards are kind of a personal thing — some people love them, some people have boxes full of them they never look at. if you work a really special contact or a rare entity its nice to have a paper card for the wall but you definitely dont need to do it for every qso. log4om should be able to upload to both LoTW and eQSL directly from the software once you configure it, worth looking into so you dont have to do it manually every time.

honestly i was in the same boat when i started and i just did eQSL first because it was easier and then got LoTW working a few months later. you dont have to do everything at once. i still send physical cards for DX contacts that feel special but i stopped sending them for every contact years ago, the postage adds up fast if youre doing it direct and the bureau is slow like sometimes years slow lol
