first real contest season coming up — where do i even start

so i got my general back in march and ive been mostly just rag chewing on 40m and doing some SOTA activations which have been really fun honestly. but everyone keeps telling me i need to try a contest and CQ WW is coming up and i just... dont even know where to start. like do i need special software, do i just tune around and call people, how does the exchange work. i looked up the rules on the CQ website and it kind of made sense but also kind of didnt.

also is Field Day a contest or not because ive gotten like three different answers on that lol. my club does a Field Day setup every year and i went last year before i had my ticket but i didnt really understand what was happening. this year i actually want to operate and not just watch people stress out over the generator.

anyway if anyone has done CQ WW or even just ARRL sweepstakes or something similar and wants to give me the quick rundown id really appreciate it. im running a modest station, IC-7300 into a dipole up about 30 feet, nothing crazy but it works ok for local stuff.

Field Day is kind of its own thing — ARRL calls it a contest but a lot of people treat it more like an operating event or emergency preparedness exercise. you still exchange information and log contacts but the scoring is really different from something like CQ WW. either way it's a great way to get your feet wet because there's usually experienced people around to help and nobody expects you to know what youre doing the first time.

for CQ WW specifically the exchange is pretty simple, you send your signal report and your CQ zone. thats it. the tricky part is just getting used to the pace because during peak hours it gets fast. i'd say start by just tuning around in search and pounce mode where you find someone already running a frequency, wait for a gap, call them, do the exchange and move on. dont try to run a frequency yourself your first time, just answer other peoples calls. N1MM Logger is what most contesters use and its free, worth getting set up before the weekend even if you just use it to log a few contacts.

your IC-7300 and a dipole is totally fine for your first contest. dont let people make you think you need a beam and an amp to participate. you wont win but youll have a blast and learn a ton.

yeah what he said about Field Day is right, its a weird hybrid thing. but honestly just go and operate at your club setup this year, even if you only make 20 contacts it gives you a feel for the pileup thing without the pressure of being alone at your own station.

SOTA is great prep for contesting too because you already know how to work fast exchanges if youve been doing activations. i did my first CQ WW like two years ago and was totally lost for the first hour then something just clicked. stick with 40m to start since thats what you know.
