SSB audio quality — what actually makes a difference vs what's just placebo

so ive been going back and forth on this for a while now and wanted to get some real opinions from people who actually operate a lot of SSB. lately ive been doing more HF phone stuff, mostly 40 and 20m, and getting varying feedback on my audio from different operators. some say it sounds great, others say it sounds thin or like im in a tunnel, and i cant figure out if its my mic, the processing settings in the radio, or something i'm doing with mic gain and compression.

right now running an IC-7300 with the stock HM-219 mic. i know i know, everyone says upgrade the mic, but ive also heard the 7300 has pretty capable built-in processing and EQ if you actually set it up correctly. i've played with the TX tone settings a bit but honestly haven't gone deep into it. mostly running mid-range compression, maybe 3-4 bars on the ALC.

what i'm really wondering is — how much of the SSB audio quality stuff is genuinely useful technique versus gear snob territory. like does a $150 aftermarket mic actually sound that much better or is it more about getting the radio settings dialed in properly first. and is there a good way to actually monitor your own transmitted audio without just relying on random reports from the other end

the stock mic on the 7300 isnt bad at all honestly, the bigger issue most people have is mic gain set too high. if your ALC is pinning consistently youre probably overdriving it and that's where the 'tunnel' sound comes from — compressed to death and starting to clip. try backing the mic gain down until the ALC barely moves on normal speech peaks, like occasional flickers rather than sitting up in the red.

the TX EQ in the 7300 is actually pretty decent, i run a slight boost around 2-3kHz and roll off below 200Hz, cleans up the low end rumble and helps with intelligibility on the other end. speech compression is useful but more than about 4-5dB of it and youre usually making things worse not better. a lot of guys crank it thinking more compression equals louder but it just makes you sound harsh.

for monitoring your own audio — the 7300 has a monitor function you can enable to hear yourself through the speaker with a slight delay, which is handy. but the best real-world check is finding a patient buddy on a linked repeater or just on 40m and doing an actual A/B with settings. dont trust just one report, get a few opinions from stations running decent rigs of their own.

yeah i went down this rabbit hole last winter and spent way too much time on it lol. ended up getting an Heil PR-781 and while it does sound noticeably better for SSB than the stock mic, i think the bigger improvement came from actually learning the 7300's processing settings properly. there's a guy on youtube who did a really detailed video specifically on 7300 TX audio and it walked through all the hidden menu stuff, worth finding if you havent already.

one thing nobody really tells you — mic distance matters a lot more than people think on SSB. too close and you get proximity effect buildup and plosives all over the place, too far and you lose level and start riding the compressor harder. somewhere around 2-3 inches seems to be the sweet spot for most desk mics.
