APRS Frequency Congestion and Path Optimization in 2026

APRS faces challenges with outdated infrastructure and congestion on 144.390 MHz, especially in urban areas. While WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 is the recommended path, mobile stations in populated areas should consider using only WIDE1-1 since there are usually enough IGates nearby. Integration with mesh networks like AREDN could improve resilience and expand APRS applications beyond traditional tracking. What path strategies are others using to minimize network congestion while maintaining coverage?

Keep transmissions brief and use appropriate SSIDs to identify your station type. In my metro area, I run WIDE1-1 during commute hours and switch to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 only for longer trips outside the urban core. Smart beaconing helps too.

Aircraft and balloon stations should avoid any path at altitude since digipeating isn't necessary due to antenna height. We've seen significant improvement in our region since implementing proportional pathing based on speed and distance from home station.

As a newcomer, this is really helpful. Should I monitor the APRS frequency before transmitting to avoid interference? I'm setting up my first mobile station and don't want to contribute to the congestion problem you're describing.
