first time checking into a net and i had no idea what i was doing lol

 Loading...

so last tuesday i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local 2m net for the first time. ive been licensed for about 4 months now and just been doing simplex stuff with a neighbor who got me into the hobby but he kept saying i should try the net.

anyway the net control called for check-ins and i just kind of froze for a second and then keyed up and gave my callsign but i think i did it wrong? like i didnt know if i was supposed to say my callsign phonetically or just say it normally, and i also wasnt sure how long to wait after someone else checks in before i key up. i ended up stepping on somebody i think and felt terrible about it.

is there like a standard way to do this or does every net have its own thing going on. the net control was super nice and acknowledged me fine but i want to do it right next time. do most people give their call phonetically on check in or just say it fast and normal

dont worry about it at all, everyone steps on someone their first time checking into a net, even people who've been doing it for years still clip somebody occasionally when the timing is weird. the main thing is you actually did it which is the hard part.

as for phonetics, it kinda depends on the net honestly. on a local 2m net where the audio is clear most people just say their call normally and maybe spell it out if their suffix is something that sounds ambiguous. but on HF nets or anything with a lot of QRM you pretty much always want phonetics. i'd say just listen to a few more check-ins from other people before you key up and match whatever they're doing. net control usually sets the tone too, if they're using phonetics when they call for check-ins then go ahead and use them yourself.

the pause thing is just feel honestly. give it maybe a beat or two after the previous station finishes and before you key up. youll get a sense for the rhythm after a few times. sounds like you did fine for a first check-in.

ha i did the exact same thing my first net check-in, stepped right on somebody and wanted to just shut the radio off and pretend it never happened. net control just moved on like nothing happened which honestly made me feel better.

one thing that helped me was pulling up the net's audio on echolink a couple times before i actually tried checking in, just so i could hear how people were doing it and how fast the pacing was. not all nets do echolink but some do. anyway you'll get comfortable with it fast, after like two or three check-ins it starts feeling pretty natural
