finally caught a 10m opening yesterday — is the solar flux actually improving or did i just get lucky

 Loading...

so ive been kind of obsessed with checking DXMaps and the solar flux index lately because 10 meters has been basically dead for me for like the past few weeks and then yesterday afternoon out of nowhere i started hearing European stations coming in strong, like genuinely S7-S8 on some of them, and I managed to work a couple of Italian stations and one from Spain before it just kind of faded out again maybe 45 minutes later.

the SFI was sitting around 145 when i checked it that morning which isnt crazy high but not bad either, and the K index was low which probably helped. im just wondering if this is a sign that things are actually picking up or if it was just a random fluke. i know the solar cycle is supposed to be ramping up toward solar max but honestly the bands have felt pretty inconsistent to me, some days 10m is alive and other days it might as well not exist.

anyone else notice more openings lately or have a better sense of whats actually going on with the cycle right now? im still fairly new to chasing DX and trying to get a feel for how to predict when its worth even bothering to tune around up there

yeah that wasnt luck, 145 SFI with a quiet K index is actually pretty decent conditions and a 45 minute opening to Europe on 10m sounds about right for this time of year in the afternoon. the F2 propagation path to Europe usually peaks kind of mid-afternoon your local time depending on where you are.

the cycle really is picking up — we're apparently ahead of the original predictions for Solar Cycle 25 which is pretty exciting. some days the flux jumps up over 180 or even higher and on those days 10m and even 6m can go absolutely nuts. the frustrating thing is it's still inconsistent because we're not at solar max yet, so you get these bursts of good conditions and then a few quiet days. best thing i can tell you is just keep an eye on the SFI daily and whenever you see it trending up and the A index stays low, get on 10m in the early to mid afternoon. also check DXMaps before you even turn the radio on, if you see spots lighting up across the Atlantic you know the band is open

I had the same opening here in the midwest, worked a G station and a DL back to back which was pretty cool since I only got my license last year and don't have many European contacts yet. Honestly I had no idea what was happening I just happened to be spinning the dial and heard all this activity around 28.5 MHz and jumped in. Didn't realize until after that the band had opened up. Maybe I should be paying more attention to those solar indices you mentioned, I kind of just turn on the radio and hope for the best lol
