first WWFF activation went way better than expected — some thoughts

 Loading...

so i finally did my first proper WWFF activation last weekend, been meaning to do one for ages but kept putting it off because i wasnt sure i had the right gear or knew what i was doing well enough. ended up going to a local nature reserve that was already listed as a reference on the WWFF directory and honestly it was way more fun than i expected.

set up my buddistick on a small carbon fiber mast, had the KX2 running on a 3ah lipo and just worked the pileup for about 2 hours on 40m. got well over the 44 QSOs needed to log it as an activation which still kind of surprises me because the location was pretty sheltered by trees. signals were getting out fine though.

only thing i wasn't sure about was the logging — i used WWFF-QSO-Party logger on my laptop but i've seen people talk about using other apps too. does it matter which log format you submit as long as it has the right fields? i uploaded to the WWFF logger site after and it seemed to accept it but i wasnt 100% sure everything was correct with the reference number format.

anyway if anyone is on the fence about trying WWFF i'd say just go for it, it's a really nice way to get outside and operate at the same time

nice, i've been thinking about doing one too but i keep second guessing my antenna situation. good to know the buddistick worked ok under trees, that's kind of my worry since most of the parks near me

congrats on the first one, the 44 QSO minimum always feels like a lot before you start but once the pileup gets going time flies. for the logging the ADIF format is what most people submit and as long as the WWFF_REF field is in there with the right reference code you should be fine. the reference format is usually like KFF-XXXX for the US or GFF- for German references etc depending on the country program. if it got accepted on the upload it almost certainly parsed correctly, the system is pretty good at catching errors before they go through.

i've done maybe 30 or so activations now across a few different programs, WWFF POTA and some SOTA overlap too, and the logging side is honestly the bit that stressed me out most at first but it becomes second nature pretty fast. what reference were you at if you dont mind sharing, always curious to see what's getting activated

nice, i've been thinking about doing one too but i keep second guessing my antenna situation. good to know the buddistick worked ok under trees, that's kind of my worry since most of the parks near me are pretty wooded. did you have any trouble with noise or was it pretty quiet out there rf wise
