checking in to nets for the first time — bit confused about how it all works

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about three months now (general class) and people keep telling me i should get on the local nets and also some of the bigger HF ones but honestly i still dont really understand how it works. like do you just tune to the frequency and wait? or is there some specific thing you say when you check in? i tried to listen to the tuesday night 2m net our club runs but i got nervous and just listened the whole time without actually checking in

also i saw something about a special event station on qrz for some historic lighthouse thing coming up and it said you could check in or make contact for a certificate. is that a completely different thing from a regular net or kind of the same idea? sorry if this is a dumb question, just trying to figure out the on-air stuff because i feel like i mostly just sit here with a working radio and dont actually use it

not a dumb question at all, honestly most new hams go through exactly this. for a regular net the net control station will usually open it up and say something like "is there any station wishing to check in" or whatever their format is, and you just key up and say your callsign phonetically. thats really it. some nets want your name and location too, net control will usually tell you what they want when they ask for check-ins.

the nervousness goes away fast, i promise. first few times your voice might shake a little but nobody cares, everyone was new once. just make sure you wait for a clear break and dont step on anyone. if you miss the check-in window some net controls will still take late check-ins toward the end too so dont stress if you miss the first round.

the special event stations are a totally separate thing from nets. youre just making a normal QSO with them to get the credit or certificate, no formal check-in procedure. the lighthouse ones are usually on weekends and theyre fun to hunt around for. worth doing if you have time.

yeah what he said. i was the same way my first few months, just listened to the evening net like five or six times before i actually checked in. felt kind of silly in hindsight because when i finally did it it was like 10 seconds and then you just wait to see if net control acknowledges you and thats basically it lol

the special event stations are super fun btw, some of them have really nice certificates or QSL cards they send out. the lighthouse weekend specifically gets pretty busy on 40m and 20m if i remember right, lots of stations to work
