confused about where exactly i can operate on 40m as a general

ok so i just upgraded from tech to general last month and im trying to figure out the 40 meter band. i know generals have more privileges than techs but every chart i look at shows different things and i cant figure out if im reading it right. like theres the FCC allocation and then theres the ARRL band plan and they dont always match up? or am i missing something

specifically i keep seeing people say dont operate too close to the band edge and i get that in theory but what does that actually mean in practice. like if 7.125 is supposedly where general phone starts, can i just tune to 7.125 and start calling or is there some buffer i should leave. someone at my club said something about your signal having width and that you need to account for that but i wasnt totally sure what he meant

also is 40m phone generally LSB down there? i think i know the answer but want to make sure before i make an embarrassing mistake on the air

yeah your club guy is right about the signal width thing, thats actually the key thing new generals miss. when you're running SSB your actual transmitted signal isnt just on one exact frequency — it occupies a few kHz of bandwidth. so if you set your dial to 7.125 and your signal is spreading downward (which it does on LSB), part of your transmission could technically be below the general segment. most rigs show you the carrier frequency not the edge of your signal.

general rule of thumb a lot of people use is stay at least 3 kHz inside the band edge to be safe, so more like 7.128 or higher if youre doing phone. some guys say 5 kHz just to be extra cautious. the FCC part 97 rules are what actually matter legally, the ARRL band plan is kind of a gentlemens agreement on top of that to help organize things, like keeping certain modes to certain parts of the band. and yes, 40m phone is LSB, everything below 10 MHz is traditionally LSB except some digital modes which kind of do their own thing.

went through the exact same confusion when i upgraded honestly. what helped me was just downloading the ARRL frequency chart pdf and keeping it next to the radio for a while. the band edge thing tripped me up too at first. i accidentally got yelled at on 80m for being too close to the tech/general line, which was embarrassing but whatever, you learn

40m can be kind of a zoo especially in the evenings when the DX starts rolling in and everyone piles up around 7.150-7.200 range. just find a clear frequency, listen for a bit, then ask if its in use before you start calling. youll figure it out pretty quick
