First WWFF activation — way harder than I expected but also way more fun

 Loading...

So I finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend, been meaning to do one for ages after lurking on the WWFF groups online. Picked a state forest about 45 minutes from home, KFF reference, packed up the FT-818 and my linked dipole and hiked in maybe a mile or so to a decent clearing.

First thing I underestimated was how long it takes to get 44 contacts. I know POTA only needs 10 so I kind of assumed it wouldnt be that different but wow. Took me about 3.5 hours on 40m and 20m combined. Signals were decent but I kept losing the pileup and had to call CQ for stretches that felt like forever. Also forgot to post a spot before I left the car so the first hour was pretty slow until someone spotted me.

But honestly? The whole experience was great. Sitting out there in the woods with headphones on, birds going nuts around me, it's kind of hard to explain to non-hams why it's so much better than operating from the shack. Something about it just clicks.

Anyone have tips for getting to 44 faster? Do people usually pre-announce activations on the WWFF groups ahead of time or just rely on self-spotting once you're out there?

yeah pre-announcing is basically essential for WWFF if you want a smooth run, especially for the 44 contact requirement. The WWFF groups on Facebook and also the wwff.us groups are pretty active and chasers will literally put your activation on their calendar. Post a few days out with the reference number, your planned frequencies and mode, and a rough time window. You'll have people waiting for you.

Also self-spotting as soon as you're set up makes a huge difference — use the POTA app or just post to the WWFF spotting network directly. A lot of WWFF chasers watch both. Once you get spotted it usually snowballs pretty quick. 44 is totally doable in under 2 hours once you get the hang of the timing. Sounds like a great first activation though, that feeling of operating outside never really gets old for me even after doing dozens of these.

I had the same experience my first time, thought 44 would be easy and then just... sat there calling CQ into what felt like an empty band for like 45 minutes lol. The pre-announcing thing is real, i didn't believe it would matter that much but the difference between going in cold vs having a few chasers who know you're coming is night and day. Also have you looked at whether your reference is activated before? Some of the rarer or first-time references get way more attention from chasers who are trying to collect new ones.
