first time checking into a net and i had no idea what i was doing lol

 Loading...

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local 2m net last tuesday and honestly it was kind of embarrassing. i had been listening for a few weeks just to get a feel for it but when the net control called for check-ins i just froze for a second and then keyed up and gave my callsign but i think i did it at the wrong time and someone was already mid-transmission so there was this weird doubling thing. net control was super nice about it and had me go again but i felt like everyone was judging me.

anyway i got through it and they welcomed me which was really cool. but now i have questions. like when do you actually key up during check-ins, do you wait for a full pause or is there some other signal? and is it weird to just give your callsign and nothing else or should you say your name and location too? i've heard different things. also is it rude to check in and then just listen and not say anything else the whole net?

i know this is probably basic stuff but nobody really explained the flow to me when i got my ticket

dont worry about the doubling thing, that happens to literally everyone at least once including people who've been licensed for years. net control has heard it a thousand times and they dont care, they just want to get you checked in.

for the timing question - most nets will have the net control say something like "additional check-ins" or pause for a second or two specifically for that. you want to listen for the tail end of their transmission and that short gap before they move on. some nets use a specific beep or courtesy tone on the repeater which is your cue. just takes a few times of listening to get the rhythm down.

and no its absolutely not rude to check in and mostly just listen. thats actually how a lot of people participate especially newer folks. some nets are more talkative and some are very structured and business-like. if they ask if you have any traffic or comments just say "negative" or "nothing for the net" and youre good. you did fine, keep checking in and itll feel natural within a few weeks

yeah i was in the same boat about six months ago. the thing that helped me was actually asking the net control operator after the net was over - like just called them directly on the repeater and said hey im new can you give me some pointers. most net controls are thrilled to help and will walk you through their specific net's procedures because they do vary quite a bit from net to net.

some nets want just your callsign, some want callsign name and location, some have a specific format they announce at the top of the net if you can catch it. the weekly training net in my area actually has a whole segment for new operators which is nice but not every club does that
