confused about where exactly i can operate on 40m as a general

 Loading...

ok so i just upgraded from tech to general last month and im trying to figure out where i can actually transmit on 40 meters. ive been reading the band plan on the arrl website but honestly its kind of confusing because theres what the FCC says you can do and then theres what the band plan recommends and they dont always seem to match up exactly?

like i know generals get phone privileges starting at 7.175 up to 7.300 but then ive also heard people say you should stay away from the band edges and i dont really understand why. is that a rule or just a suggestion. also someone at my club mentioned something about the lower part of 40 being mostly DX and CW territory and that SSB guys shouldnt be hanging around down there which i didnt even know was a thing. just trying not to step on anyone or do something embarrassing on my first few outings

so the short version is -- the FCC allocation is the law, the band plan is basically a gentlemens agreement that most people follow. you wont get your license revoked for operating at say 7.178 but youre gonna get some grumpy comments from people who treat the band plan like scripture lol

the band edge thing is real practical advice though. if youre running SSB and you set your dial to 7.300 your signal is actually gonna splash above that depending on your rig and your audio, and thats where you get into trouble with the FCC. most people say stay at least 3 khz inside the edge just to be safe, so like 7.297 or lower for upper sideband. same idea on the bottom end of your privileges.

the DX window thing on 40 is just tradition, nobody can legally stop you from operating in that range if you have the allocation, but if you jump on 7.190 calling CQ domestic ragchew youre gonna hear about it from the DX crowd. its one of those unwritten rules that new generals trip over all the time, no big deal just good to know.

yeah i was in the same boat when i upgraded. what helped me was just downloading the ARRL band plan pdf and keeping it next to the radio for a while. after a few weeks of actually operating you kinda just absorb where things are without having to look it up constantly.

one thing nobody told me that i wish they had -- on 40 meters especially, a lot of the activity shifts depending on the time of day and what propagation is doing, so the spots where people are hanging out change pretty dramatically from afternoon to evening. took me a while to realize i was tuning around at the wrong times and wondering why the band sounded dead
