confused about what i can and cant do on HF with my new General ticket

 Loading...

so i just upgraded from Tech to General last month and im trying to figure out what frequencies i can actually use now. ive been reading Part 97 but honestly its kind of confusing the way its written. like i know i have more privileges now but the band plan chart i have doesnt always match up with what im seeing in the actual FCC rules document and i dont know which one to trust.

also someone at my club mentioned something about phone vs data vs CW segments and how you can only run certain emissions in certain parts of the band? i kind of understood it but not really. and then theres the power limits, i thought General was 1500 watts on HF but someone said theres exceptions on certain bands or near certain frequencies. anyway just looking for someone to explain it in plain english because the actual Part 97 text makes my head spin a little

yeah the ARRL band plan and the actual FCC allocations are two different things, thats where a lot of people get tripped up. the FCC rules in Part 97.301 and 97.305 are what actually matter legally, the ARRL band plan is more like a gentlemans agreement on top of that. so technically you could operate somewhere the band plan says not to and still be legal, but youd probably annoy everyone around you so most people just follow the ARRL plan anyway.

for the emission types thing, yeah 97.305 spells out which emission types are allowed in which segments. like CW is allowed almost everywhere on HF but phone has more restrictions, especially for General class on 40 and 75/80 meters where you're kind of squeezed into a smaller slice than Extra class gets. power wise 1500 watts is the max for most of HF but there are some spots, 60 meters being the main one, where youre limited to 100 watts ERP and you can only use specific channels. 60 meters is kind of its own weird thing honestly.

best thing i ever did was just print out the actual Part 97 subpart D and read through it with the ARRL band plan side by side. takes maybe an hour and after that it all clicks way better than trying to read either one alone.

I was in the same boat when I upgraded. Honestly the thing that helped me most was just using the ARRL's frequency chart PDF, the one thats color coded by license class. Its not the official legal document but it translates the Part 97 stuff into something a normal person can actually read. Just keep in mind like the other guy probably said its not 100% the same as the FCC rules so if you ever really need to know for sure, go to the source.

the 60 meter thing is genuinely confusing btw, dont feel bad if that part doesnt make sense right away. its channelized and the power limit is calculated differently than everywhere else. i just kind of avoid it for now lol
