first time doing a net check-in, felt totally lost but also kinda loved it

 Loading...

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into a local 2m net last thursday night. ive been licensed for about four months now and honestly kept putting it off because i was scared of stepping on someone or missing my window or just generally sounding like an idiot on the air.

anyway the net control was super patient and i just gave my callsign when he called for check-ins and that was basically it. i had been psyching myself out for nothing. but now i have questions — how do you actually find out about other nets? like i found this one through the local club website but i feel like there must be more going on that im not aware of. is there a good place to look up net schedules? someone mentioned the ARRL net directory but when i looked at it the info seemed kinda old for some of the listings.

also totally unrelated but there was a special event station mentioned at the end of the net, something with a 1x1 callsign, and i have no idea what that was about. do those count for anything or are they just fun to work?

welcome to the addiction ha. yeah the ARRL net directory is hit or miss honestly, some of those listings havent been updated in years. best thing i ever did was just ask around at the club or on the local repeater — usually somebody knows whats active and whats basically dead. there are also a few regional net directories that are way more current than the national one, depends where you are.

and yeah special event stations are mostly just fun, you can sometimes get a certificate or a QSL card from them which is cool if you're into that sort of thing. the 1x1 callsigns get issued for specific events, like a museum or a historical anniversary or whatever. totally worth working them when you get the chance, low pressure and the ops running them are usually pretty happy to chat for a second. some events do have awards attached if you work enough of the stations in a series but dont worry about that for now, just enjoy it.

i was in the exact same spot like six months ago and i remember that first check-in feeling. for nets i ended up just lurking on a few different repeaters at different times until i stumbled on ones that were active, kind of old fashioned way of doing it but it worked. there's also an app called repeaterbook that sometimes has notes about nets tied to specific repeaters which helped me a bit.

the special event thing is really fun once you get into it. i worked a handful during field day weekend and a few lighthouse ones and its a good way to just get comfortable making contacts without the pressure of a big contest pileup or whatever.
