anyone else do the weekly nets? trying to figure out how check-ins actually work

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about 4 months now (got my tech in the spring, studying for general) and i keep hearing people talk about nets like theyre this regular thing everyone does but i honestly still dont fully understand the process. like i know you tune to the frequency and wait for the net control to call for check-ins but then what, do you just say your callsign and thats it? or is there more to it?

i found a net on 147.315 that meets on tuesday nights and i listened for a couple weeks but i was too nervous to actually check in. the net control guy seems really friendly but it goes pretty fast and i didnt want to mess anything up. is there like a standard format i should know before i try? also i saw something about a special event station for a local hamfest coming up and wondering if those work differently than a regular net check-in

oh man dont be nervous about it, net check-ins are literally one of the most forgiving things in ham radio. when net control calls for check-ins you just key up and say your callsign phonetically, wait for them to acknowledge you, and thats basically it. some nets ask for your name and location too but theyll usually tell you what they want at the start of the net or right before they open for check-ins.

i remember my first check-in i totally fumbled my phonetics and the net control just asked me to repeat and was super cool about it. honestly after you do it once youll wonder why you waited so long. just jump in on that tuesday net, worst case you have to say your call twice and nobody cares.

as for special event stations those are a bit different, youre usually just trying to contact them to get a QSL card or a certificate, not really a check-in format. depends on the event though. some hamfests set up a station and just do regular contacts, others have specific exchange info they want.

yeah what he said. also a lot of nets have their format posted on a website if you can find it, like the ARRL net directory has a bunch listed with contact info and sometimes the net manager will email you the format if you ask. i did that before my first HF net and it helped a lot knowing what to expect.
