finally built my first QRP rig and took it out to the park — some thoughts

 Loading...

so i've been wanting to do this for probably two years now and last weekend i finally just did it. built a little bitx40 variant, nothing fancy, maybe 5 watts out on a good day, and threw it in a bag with a end-fed wire and a small lipo pack and drove out to the state park about 20 minutes from my house.

honestly wasnt expecting much, i figured id maybe make a couple contacts if i was lucky. but i set up under a tree, got the wire up maybe 25 feet into the branches with a throw line, tuned around 7.030 and within about 15 minutes had a guy in ohio come back to my CQ. we talked for maybe 10 minutes, solid 559 both ways, and i just... i dont know, something about doing it with a rig i built myself, running like 4.8 watts, sitting on a picnic bench in the middle of nowhere — it just hit different than working from the shack.

made three more contacts that afternoon. one guy in tennessee who was also running QRP (we had a good laugh about that), and two others in the midwest somewhere. nothing exotic but i was grinning the whole time. anyway just wanted to share because i feel like QRP portable stuff doesnt get talked about enough compared to like the big antenna threads and whatnot. anyone else doing this regularly? tips for improving efficiency on a budget build?

yeah this is exactly how it hooks you, man. i remember my first portable QRP contact like it was last month and it was probably 2019. there's just something about the whole thing — the minimal gear, figuring out the antenna situation on the fly, the satisfaction when someone actually hears you running milliwatts essentially.

for efficiency on a budget build, couple things that helped me a lot: first, really pay attention to your final transistor biasing if you havent already. a lot of kit builds are a little conservative there and you can sometimes squeeze out another half watt or so with some careful adjustment, though obviously watch your heat. second thing is the antenna is doing way more work than most people realize at QRP levels. ive seen guys obsess over squeezing one more watt out of their PA when if they just got their wire up another 10 feet theyd do way better. your end-fed setup sounds solid but experiment with the height and orientation when you can, makes a real difference. glad you finally got out there and did it.

thats so cool, im still saving up parts to build something similar. did you have much trouble with the lipo pack or were you using like a commercial one? i keep going back and forth on whether to just grab a cheap 3s pack from amazon or actually build a proper battery setup with BMS and whatnot. dont want to burn the park down lol
