confused about what i can and cant do on HF as a general class

okay so i passed my general exam back in march and ive been trying to figure out exactly what frequencies im allowed to use and honestly the FCC part 97 document is kind of a nightmare to read through. like i understand theres a privilege chart but every time i look at it i feel like im reading a different thing than what someone else told me.

my main question is about the 40 meter band specifically. someone at my club told me generals can use phone starting at 7.175 but then i looked at the arrl chart and it looks like its 7.175 to 7.300 for phone, which seems right but then someone else said something about a different segment for like digital modes and now im just completely turned around. also does any of this matter if im just doing like casual ragchews or is it more of a contest situation thing where people get strict about it

also separate question kind of, if i accidentally transmit outside my privileges do i need to report that or is it just like a dont do it again situation. asking for a friend lol

yeah the band plan stuff can be confusing especially because theres the FCC allocations which are the actual legal limits and then theres the ARRL band plan which is kind of a gentlemens agreement on top of that. for 40m as a general you can do phone from 7.175 up to 7.300 MHz, that part is correct. the digital and CW stuff is lower in the band, roughly 7.025 to 7.125 for generals on CW and some data modes. Extras get the whole thing basically.

as for accidentally going out of band, part 97 doesnt really have a self-reporting requirement for something like that. if its a genuine mistake and not a pattern of behavior youre probably fine. the FCC isnt sitting there monitoring every QSO. that said if someone files a complaint thats a different story but for an honest oops-i-was-3kHz-off situation, just learn from it and move on. the more important thing is knowing where your carrier frequency puts your actual signal, like if youre doing SSB your carrier might be at 7.174 but your voice is going up from there so you want some margin.

i had the same confusion when i upgraded, the chart in the back of the gordon west book was actually clearer to me than the official FCC version honestly. one thing that tripped me up is that the frequencies listed are like the carrier or suppressed carrier point not where the audio ends up, so on LSB you're actually going DOWN in frequency from where you set the dial which means you need a little buffer near the bottom edges of your allocation. my elmer drilled that into me pretty hard after i almost goofed up near the tech/general boundary on 40m
