Mobile power installation - direct to battery vs fuse box?

Installing a Kenwood TM-D710GA in my 2023 F-150 and need advice on power connections. Should I run power directly off the battery, and definitely avoid cigarette lighter sockets. But what about using the fuse box with a fused tap? The truck has a large auxiliary fuse box under the hood with some empty spots rated for 40A. Would this be acceptable or should I bite the bullet and run direct to battery terminals?

  • Planning 30A fuse protection

Do a proper install with direct battery connection - this gives you reliable operation when you need it most. I know it's more work but worth doing right the first time. The voltage drop through multiple connections can cause issues.

I've used both methods. For a 13A radio like yours, direct to battery is better. Fuse box connections can introduce noise and voltage drops. Do it right the first time - you'll have less troubleshooting later.

That auxiliary fuse box might actually work fine if it's heavy gauge wiring to the battery. Check the wire size feeding that box - if it's 12AWG or larger you're probably okay. But direct battery is always the gold standard.
