when does 10m actually open up these days? feeling like im missing something

 Loading...

so ive been licensed about 8 months now and keep hearing people talk about how amazing 10 meters is supposed to be near solar maximum but honestly every time i tune around up there its just... quiet. like nothing. occasionally ill hear some beacon or a carrier somewhere but thats it. i know we're supposed to be near or at solar max right now and the SFI numbers have been pretty high lately, like ive seen it up around 180-200 some days, but i cant seem to catch any of these openings everyone talks about.

is there a specific time of day i should be watching? or is it more of a regional thing where the paths just dont favor my location (im in the midwest, ohio specifically). my antenna situation isnt ideal — just a dipole up about 25 feet — but that shouldnt be a killing it completely should it. genuinely curious if im just on at the wrong times or if theres something else going on.

10m is weird like that, it can go from completely dead to absolutely insane in like 20 minutes. the thing most people dont realize starting out is you gotta be watching the right indicators AND be in the right place at the right time, which sounds obvious but its harder than it sounds. your best bet is to keep an eye on the DX cluster for 10m spots — when you start seeing a bunch of spots popping up for 28 MHz you know somethings happening. also check the solar wind data not just the SFI, a high flux number doesnt automatically mean 10m is open, the K-index matters a lot too, if its elevated you can have great flux but crappy conditions because of geomagnetic disturbance.

from ohio youre actually in a pretty decent spot for transatlantic openings, usually mid morning to early afternoon your local time is worth watching, like 9am to 1pm or so for Europe. South America can open up later in the day. just park on 28.400 or so and call CQ or listen, and honestly check DXmaps.com, it shows realtime 10m spots on a map and its really satisfying to watch when a big opening is happening.

yeah I was the same way for a long time, kept missing openings and felt like everyone else was getting in on something I wasn't. what finally helped me was joining a discord server where people were posting in real time when 10m was going nuts. like someone would drop a message saying "10m wide open to Japan right now" and id scramble to the radio and actually catch it. kind of a different way to do it but it worked lol. your dipole at 25 feet should be fine for catching a real opening, 10m propagates so well when conditions are good that even a wet noodle antenna will work.
