Winlink setup - RMS gateway keeps dropping connection, not sure what im doing wrong

 Loading...

so ive been trying to get Winlink working for a few weeks now and i think i finally understand the basics but still running into issues. quick background - i have a Icom 7300 running into a Signalink USB, using Winlink Express on a windows 10 laptop. i set up the vara HF modem which took forever to figure out honestly but i got it running and the audio levels seem ok. did the calibration thing and it shows green.

the problem is when i try to connect to an RMS gateway it starts the handshake, i can see it doing something in the waterfall, but then after maybe 30-40 seconds it just drops out with a timeout error. ive tried like 5 or 6 different gateways, some close some not so close. propagation hasnt been great but i did manage one partial session where it looked like messages were actually going through before it cut out.

not sure if its a timing issue, audio level issue, or maybe i have the wrong COM port settings for PTT. the radio keys up fine when i initiate the session so ptt seems to be working at least. anyone dealt with this before or have any ideas where to start poking around

the timeout thing drove me crazy when i first set up vara too. few things to check - first, your audio levels in the Signalink, a lot of people set them too hot thinking more is better and it just causes distortion on the other end. the vara modem is pretty sensitive to that. also check if you have any audio enhancements turned on in windows for the sound device, those will absolutely wreck the signal. right click the recording device, properties, enhancements tab, disable everything.

also worth looking at which gateways youre trying. some of the high traffic ones are busy a lot and you can get bumped. the RMS gateway list in winlink express shows the last heard time and frequency, try to pick one that was recently active and not super far away. 40m has been decent the last few evenings around here. and check your power - you dont need to run full power on vara, actually dial it back, like 50-60 watts max for hf, vara doesnt love being driven hard.

yeah what he said about the audio enhancements is spot on, windows is sneaky about that stuff and it'll ruin your day. one other thing i'd add - double check that your radio isnt doing any noise reduction or DSP filtering on transmit. the 7300 has some settings that can mess with digital modes if you're not in the right mode profile. i run mine in USB-D and turned off all the extra processing for digital work.

the partial session thing is interesting though, if messages are actually queuing and partly going through then its probably not a fundamental config problem, might just be a marginal path to the gateway and you need better conditions or a closer station. have you checked the winlink maps to see whats actually reachable from your location on the bands you're using
