HT battery life tips and antenna upgrades - what's working for you?

Been using my Baofeng UV-82 for about 6 months now and really enjoying getting into the hobby, but I'm running into some limitations. Battery seems to drain pretty quickly on higher power settings, and I'm wondering if upgrading the antenna would give me better performance than just cranking up the watts.

I've read about putting an antenna on the roof of your house or in the attic should net you triple the range on simplex and give you access to most repeaters in a 40-50 mile radius. Has anyone tried this setup? Also curious about those Nagoya replacement antennas - worth the upgrade over the stock rubber duck?

I often use the lowest power I can. This means 2.5 - 3W around here typically gets right into the repeaters. 1W works, but one would need to be outdoors. Try experimenting with lower power settings - you might be surprised how little you actually need for local work!

Definitely upgrade that antenna! The Nagoya NA-771, at just under 16 inches, is close to a quarter-wave vertical antenna and much more efficient than the typical rubber duck antenna shipped with most handheld transceivers. Be careful though - because this antenna is so popular, unscrupulous vendors are selling counterfeit antennas. Consult the Nagoya website for information on how to identify fake antennas.

Under ideal conditions, range increases with the square root of the increase in power. So going from 5 watts to 10 would give you about 40% more range, not twice as much. A better antenna will give you much more improvement than doubling your power. Plus the biggest real-world impact of running higher power on an HT is lower battery life.
