trying to find some good nets to check into — where do you all hang out?

 Loading...

so i finally got my general ticket back in march and ive been mostly just listening around on HF but i feel like im missing out on the social side of things. a buddy of mine mentioned that nets are a good way to actually meet people and practice your operating without the pressure of like cold calling random DX stations which honestly still makes me nervous.

problem is i dont really know where to start. i looked up a few net directories online but some of the schedules seem out of date and i tuned into a couple frequencies at the listed times and just heard nothing. are there good resources for finding active nets? also curious if any of you have favorite nets you check into regularly — doesnt matter what kind, ragchew, traffic, whatever. just trying to get more active and actually use this radio i spent way too much money on.

the arrl net directory is hit or miss honestly, youre right that some of the listings are stale. what i usually tell newer folks is to just ask around on whatever repeater you already have access to — someone local almost always knows whats active in your area and thats going to be way more useful than a national database.

that said for HF i really like the 40 meter rag chew net, runs in the evenings and the guys on there are super welcoming especially to newer generals. also worth checking out the 75 meter phone nets if you want something a little more lively, though that band can get... colorful sometimes. for traffic handling the NTS nets are well organized and they run on a pretty reliable schedule if you want something more structured. stick with it, checking into a net the first time feels awkward but after a couple times you wont even think about it.

oh also dont overlook the special event stations — those are really fun and a good low pressure way to make contacts. there are usually a few running any given weekend, sometimes for parks on the air, sometimes for historical events or whatever. you just call them like any other station and they often have a more relaxed pace than contest pile-ups. the arrl website usually lists upcoming ones and so does qrz if you poke around a bit. got a nice certificate from one last summer for a lighthouse event and it was genuinely one of the more enjoyable afternoons ive had on the radio.
