first WWFF activation - what am I missing here

 Loading...

so ive been chasing WWFF references for a while now and finally decided to do my first activation last weekend. went out to a state forest about 45 minutes from me, set up my KX3 with a linked dipole in the trees, and honestly had a blast. got my 44 QSOs which i know is the minimum for a valid activation but i feel like i kind of fumbled through the whole logging and spotting thing.

I used WWFF logger on my tablet but the GPS kept dropping and i wasnt sure if i needed to log the reference name every single QSO or if it just applies to the whole log when you upload. also forgot to self-spot when i started which i think cost me like the first 20 minutes of potential contacts. does the park reference number always have to be in your spot comment or will hunters find you anyway if youre in the right frequency range. anyway the park itself was gorgeous, had the whole place to myself which made the radio stuff way less stressful. definitely doing another one soon.

congrats on your first one, the 44 QSO requirement trips everybody up at first but it sounds like you nailed it. on the logging question - you dont need the reference on every individual QSO line, it

congrats on your first one, the 44 QSO requirement trips everybody up at first but it sounds like you nailed it. on the logging question - you dont need the reference on every individual QSO line, it gets attached to the whole log when you upload to the WWFF logbook. just make sure your header info has the right KFF or whatever your national prefix is reference number and youre good.

self-spotting is huge, youre right about that. i usually spot myself as soon as im set up and getting signal reports, even before i really start running. the WWFF Spotter page and also just the regular POTA spotting network both work, a lot of hunters watch both. put the reference number in the comment field for sure, something like "KFF-1234 WWFF" is plenty and people will find you. some of the more active hunters have alerts set up so they get notified when a new reference goes active. once you get into a rhythm with the spotting it becomes second nature. the log itself sounds fine, have fun with the next one.

oh man i remember my first activation being exactly like that, kind of chaotic but fun. i was so focused on making contacts i completely forgot to update my spot frequency when i QSYd and then nobody could find me for like half an hour. felt dumb but you live and learn i guess.

one thing that helped me was using the WWFF logger app to auto-spot, i think it has a button that pushes your current frequency and reference to the network. not sure if it works with GPS issues though. also some people set up a basic macro on their radio or logging software so spotting is literally one button. anyway welcome to the addiction, there are some really cool references out there once you start looking at the maps.
