confused about where exactly i can operate on 40m as a general

 Loading...

ok so i just upgraded from tech to general last month and im trying to figure out the 40 meter band. i know i have more privileges now but every chart i look at seems to show something slightly different and honestly its making my head spin a little.

like i get that there are phone and cw segments but where exactly does the phone portion start for generals? and what about the band edges, ive heard people say you should never operate right at the edge but i dont fully understand why. is that a rule or just a suggestion kind of thing. also someone at my club mentioned something about a gentleman's agreement on certain frequencies but didnt really explain what that meant

sorry if this is a dumb question just want to make sure im not gonna accidentally transmit somewhere i shouldnt be

not a dumb question at all, everyone goes through this when they upgrade. so for 40m as a general you get phone privileges starting at 7.175 MHz up to 7.300 MHz. below that down to 7.025 is CW only for technicians and generals, and extra class has a bit more room on the lower end for phone too i think down to 7.150 but dont quote me on that exactly.

the band edge thing is a real practical concern not just superstition. your transmitted signal has sidebands and if youre running SSB right at 7.300 for example your actual signal can spill outside the allocation pretty easily depending on your rig and how its set up. the FCC doesnt care that your dial said 7.300, they care where your signal actually is. so most people stay a few kHz inside just to be safe, like dont park yourself on 7.298 calling CQ with a wide audio setup.

the gentlemens agreement stuff is more about things like 7.200 being kind of informally used for certain nets or 7.290 being a calling frequency in some regions. not legally binding just courtesy stuff you pick up over time

yeah what he said about the band edges is spot on. i actully made this mistake early on, had my dial sitting right on the upper edge and got a pretty stern comment from someone during a net check in. embarrassing but you learn fast lol

one thing i'd add is that the ARRL band plan and the actual FCC part 97 allocations arent always the same thing. the FCC rules are what you legally have to follow, the ARRL band plan is more like a suggested way to organize things so everyone isnt stepping on each other. so like technically you could do SSB in your general phone segment anywhere in that range but in practice certain sub-bands are kind of understood to be for digital modes or weak signal work and people get grumpy if you just plant an SSB contact in the middle of the FT8 watering hole
