confused about net check-in procedures, am i doing this wrong?

 Loading...

so ive been licensed about 4 months now and i finally worked up the nerve to check in to our local 2m net on tuesday nights. the net control guy seems friendly enough but i feel like im always doing something slightly off and i cant really tell what the right way to do things is.

like last week i checked in and gave my callsign but then i guess i was supposed to wait and he had to ask me again if i had traffic or anything. i just said no and that was fine but then another guy checked in and said something like "no traffic, monitoring" and that sounded way more official. is that the right way to do it? also how do you know when its your turn to talk vs when you should just be listening? i keyed up once when someone else was mid-sentence and got a pretty awkward double transmission situation.

i know this probably sounds like basic stuff but i just dont want to be that guy who annoys everyone on the net. any tips from people who actually run or participate in nets regularly would be really appreciated

oh man i remember being exactly where you are, dont stress about it at all. the "no traffic, monitoring" thing is just a shorthand some ops use to let net control know two things at once — that you have nothing to pass along AND that you'll stay on frequency after the net in case someone needs to reach you. totally optional phrasing but it does sound more polished yeah.

for the timing thing, the best habit i picked up early on was just waiting about a full second after you hear the squelch tail drop before you key up. feels awkward at first like youre being too slow but it gives time for any repeater delays to clear and honestly prevents most of those doubling situations. also if you ever arent sure if its your turn, its totally fine to just wait and let net control prompt you, thats literally their job and a good NCS isnt going to mind at all. youre doing fine just by showing up consistently, the procedures just kind of click after a few weeks

yeah what he said. also just worth knowing that nets can vary a LOT in how formal they are. some are super loose and casual and some follow ARRL net procedures pretty strictly, so stuff that works on one net might be slightly different somewhere else. if your net has a website or a club behind it sometimes they post the format. but honestly four months in and youre already checking in to nets, thats more than a lot of new hams ever do
