confused about what to do when joining a net for the first time

 Loading...

so i finally got my technician license about three weeks ago and ive been listening to the local 2m net every tuesday night trying to figure out how it all works before i actually try to check in. i think i understand the basic idea but there's a few things that are still tripping me up.

like when the net control calls for check-ins, do i just say my callsign once or do i say it twice? i've heard people do both and i dont want to step on anyone or do something embarrassing. also is there some specific format i should use or do i just say my call and my name or what? one guy last week said his callsign, his name, and his location but someone else just said their callsign and nothing else. i couldnt figure out if that second person was someone the net control already knew or if that's just how some people do it.

also i'm a little nervous about accidentally transmitting while someone else is talking. i have a baofeng (i know i know) and sometimes theres a delay before i can tell if the frequency is clear. any advice for a new guy trying not to make a fool of himself on his first check-in would be great

welcome to the hobby, dont stress too much about it honestly. nets are generally pretty forgiving especially for new hams. most net controls have heard it all and they're not going to be rude to someone who's clearly just learning.

for checking in, saying your callsign once clearly is usually fine, some people say it twice just to make sure they were heard through any noise or whatever but its not required. the format really does vary by net — some nets are pretty formal and they want callsign, name, location, and maybe traffic status, and some are super casual and just want to know youre there. honestly the best thing you can do is just listen to a few more sessions and pick up on what that specific net does. they usually have a format they follow.

on the Baofeng delay thing — yeah that squelch tail and VOX stuff can catch people out. just wait a beat or two after you hear the last transmission before you key up, give it maybe a second and a half. if you have the roger beep turned on, turn it off, net controls hate that thing. you'll be fine, just jump in and check in one of these tuesdays, worst case you fumble your callsign and have a laugh about it

I checked into my first net about two months ago and felt exactly the same way haha. I just listened for like a month before actually doing it. When I finally did check in I just said my callsign phonetically and my first name and that was totally fine. The net control repeated my call back to confirm which was reassuring.

one thing nobody told me before my first time — if net control doesn't acknowledge you right away dont just keep transmitting, wait and try again when they ask for any additional check-ins or late check-ins. a lot of nets will ask again at the end
