confused about the vanity callsign process — is it really just a lottery now?

 Loading...

ok so i just passed my general last month (finally, after putting it off for like two years) and im already thinking about applying for a vanity call. right now i have this sequential call thats just kind of a random string of letters and numbers, nothing wrong with it but i'd really like something shorter or maybe something that has my initials in it.

so i've been reading about the ULS application process and i keep seeing conflicting stuff. some people say you apply and if nobody else applies for the same call in the same application window it's basically yours. other people say there's a waiting period and it's first come first served. i dont really understand how the windows work — like is there a specific time you have to submit or does it roll on a schedule?

also i noticed some 1x2 and 2x1 calls are available in my district and i wasnt sure if i even qualify for those as a general or if those are extra class only. any help would be great, been poking around the FCC ULS site and it's not exactly user friendly lol

congrats on the general first of all. ok so the vanity system is not quite a lottery but i can see why it looks that way. the FCC runs application windows and the length of the window depends on what class of call you're going after. 1x2 and 2x1 calls have a longer window, something like 30 days i think, and if more than one person applies for the exact same call during that window then yeah it basically becomes a random selection among those applicants. but if you're the only one who applied for that particular callsign you get it pretty much automatically after the window closes.

as for the 1x2 question — those are available to extra class only i believe, at least in most call districts. general class can get a 1x3 call which is still pretty clean looking. you'd want to double check the current rules on the arrl vanity call page, they keep a pretty good breakdown of whats available at each license class. the fcc uls site is rough to navigate i agree, a lot of people use a third party site like ae7q dot com which makes it way easier to search available calls and see whats in the queue.

yeah i went through this last year and the ae7q site the previous guy mentioned is genuinely a lifesaver. i spent like an hour on the FCC site getting nowhere then found ae7q and had my application in within 20 minutes. you can filter by available calls in your district and see exactly whats open.

one thing i'll add — when i got my vanity call i had to wait like 18 days after the window closed before it actually showed up in the system. felt like forever but it did come through. just dont expect it to be instant even after you get the grant notice.
