confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs paper cards — what do most people actually use?

 Loading...

ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and ive been making contacts pretty regularly, mostly HF on 40 and 20m, some FT8 and occasional SSB. and i keep seeing people mention LoTW, eQSL, and also just mailing physical cards and i honestly cant figure out what the difference really is or which one i should be bothering with.

like i understand the basic concept — you log a contact, the other person logs the same contact, and then it gets confirmed somehow. but why are there three different systems? do i need all of them? i set up a LoTW account a few weeks ago and uploaded my first logs but i have no idea if anything confirmed or how to even check. and then someone in a pileup told me to send my card to their bureau address and i wasnt even sure what bureau meant in that context.

mostly asking because i want to eventually go for DXCC and i heard LoTW is the main one for that but i dont want to miss out on confirming stuff if people only use one of the other systems. any guidance appreciated, this part of the hobby is weirdly more confusing than actually operating

yeah the three system thing trips up a lot of newer folks, totally understandable. so the short version is: LoTW (Logbook of the World) is run by the ARRL and its the gold standard for award credits like DXCC. most serious DXers use it and if you're chasing DXCC you really do need it. the confirmations carry actual weight for awards. the downside is it can feel clunky and getting your certificate set up the first time is a bit of a process.

eQSL is a separate private system, easier to use honestly, and some people prefer it — but ARRL doesnt accept eQSL confirmations for DXCC so if thats your goal it wont help you there. that said a lot of casual operators and some dx stations use it and its fine for just tracking contacts personally.

paper QSL cards are kind of their own thing — some people love them, some dont bother. the bureau system is basically a way to exchange cards cheaply through national amateur radio organizations instead of paying postage to mail individual cards internationally. your national society handles sorting and forwarding. it's slow, like months sometimes, but it works. if you want cards from rare DX stations a lot of them will only respond via bureau or direct mail with a self addressed envelope and return postage.

honestly just keep uploading to LoTW regularly and dont stress the rest until you know what awards you actually want to chase. you can always backfill later.

i use all three just because why not, takes like two minutes to upload to both LoTW and eQSL after a session. i've gotten confirmations on eQSL from stations that never bothered with LoTW so it does fill in some gaps even if it doesnt count for the big awards. paper cards i only send direct when i really want one from a specific dx entity, otherwise the bureau takes forever and half the time the card never shows up anyway in my experience.

oh and checking your LoTW confirmations — log into the website and go to your logbook view, any QSO that has a matching upload from the other station will show as confirmed. if you just uploaded recently it might take a little while for matches to appear especially if the other op doesnt upload often. some guys only upload once a year or after a big trip.
